- Who
said they don't make 'em like they used to?
On this day, Todd Philips, the director of Old School and Road Trip, brings
us yet another hilarious adventure called Starsky and Hutch. Bringing in
Ben Stiller as David Starsky and Owen Wilson as Ken Hutchinson was first of all,
an excellent character endeavor. Putting these too together is a recipe for
laughs by itself, but when you add an up and coming comedic director like Todd
Philips, you will no doubt be pleased with the result. As we have seen in
earlier films (Zoolander, The Royal Tenenbaums), Ben Stiller and Owen
Wilson are one of the best comedic acting pairs we have seen in a while. Their
acting styles accent perfectly with Wilson being calm and comfortable, and
Stiller being an uptight, panicky person.
Of course these attitudes fit entirely into the roles of Stiller as Starsky
and Wilson as Hutch. David Starsky is the cop that follows protocol all the
time, but is also a crazy man with a very nice car, while Hutch is the cop that
doesn’t really care about the rules and is just looking out for himself. When
these two both get called into the captain’s (Fred Williamson’s) office for
a chat, they, reluctantly, are assigned as new partners.
So begins the journey of "fighting crime" with the two most outcast
cops on the force. After finding a floater near the docks of Bay City they start
to search the city for clues, talking to Reese Feldman (Vince Vaughn) a rich man
planning a huge cocaine deal, Huggy Bear (Snoop Dogg) a black mafia boss with
strangely intelligent crime partners, and two beautiful cheerleaders (Amy Smart
and Carmen Electra).
Finding clues along the way, they end up visiting Big Earl (Will Ferrell), a
gay, motorcycle man who sews in his free time. Big Earl tells them about Feldman
with the idea of having cocaine involved as well. "Investigation" goes
on, wig men are visited, and a pony is shot. This can only be the work of
Starsky and Hutch.
This has been one of the funniest movies released in quite a while. It
appeals to teens with some of the crude humor, but it also attracts adults as
well because Phillips doesn’t fill the entire film with crude humor like what
was done in Old School or Road Trip. I predict that this film,
while not showing superb acting or award winning directing, will go far in the
box office. This comedy is worth many laughs for anybody that sees it, and I’m
quite sure that whoever does see it won’t be disappointed.
So my advise for everyone is this: Watch it, Laugh at it, "DO IT".
