In Arizona in

Maybe
this redo didn’t need so many bells and whistles, but Mangold brings it
home Peter Travers: Rolling Stone Back in the Pleistocene Era (1957),
Elmore Leonard’s short story “3:10 to Yuma,” became a tense, tight
High Noon knockoff of a Western about a rancher (Van Heflin) trying
to get an outlaw (Glenn Ford) on a train to Yuma prison so he could
collect a reward and pay his debts. By the end – it’s a three-day trip
through Apache territory -- no one would help the poor bastard...more

but builds up to a poorly plotted, shoddily executed gun

It’s some kind of bad joke that a lame genre movie like the
new western 3:10 to Yuma gets prestige treatment while War,
an ideal example of genre filmmaking, gets ignored. Is it
that big-name actors control the market place?...more
Reinforced
by a strong central premise, James Mangold's remake walks a
fine line in retaining many of the original's qualities
while smartly shaking things up a bit Todd McCarthy: Variety
Russell Crowe may be the biggest name in the cast, but one
curious sidelight of the project is that the author of the
1953 short story on which the original 1957 film is based,
Elmore Leonard, reps far more of a draw now than he did half
