This Type of Thinking (Could Do Us
In) by Chevelle
5 out of 5
Chevelle doesn’t disappoint
their fans with the follow up to their Platinum selling
Wonder What’s Next. This trio of brothers from Chicago
continues to provide smooth groovy guitar and bass rhythms
with steady drumbeats. Songs like “Get Some”, “Still
Running”, and “Breach Birth” showcase the heaviness and
melodic qualities of the band. You can hear how the band
has continued to improve in the song writing department.
The first single and video “Vitamin R (Leading Us Along)”,
has been in heavy rotation on radio and t.v. while the
band has been playing to sold out audiences all across the
United States.
The mix and sound quality of
this recording is exceptional as usual. Chevelle is one of
the best sounding bands in the music business. The
guitars, bass, drums and vocals all blend in with each
other perfectly. Chevelle fans will cherish this recording
and if you didn’t like them before it is worth it to give
them another chance. If you like bands like Tool, Deftones,
or Saliva this is a band for you. Be sure to buy this c.d.
as soon as possible and get out and see them in concert,
you won’t be disappointed. To find out more about this

Pressure Chief
by Cake (parental advisory)
3.5 out of 5
Yes,
ladies and gentleman Cake has served up another helping of
their musical delicacies. This time around the band has
released Pressure Chief, which pretty much sounds
like the Cake that we have grown accustomed to. The bands
softer edge alternative rock style continues to produce
the catchy sing along songs that their fans know and love.
The first single “No Phone,” has a spooky little
synthesizer part that reminds me of a Snoop Dogg or Dr.
Dre song. “End of the Movie,” has a sort of blue grass
square dance type feel to it, while “Tougher Than It Is,”
starts out a little reggae-ish. This by far isn’t the best
release by Cake, but I’m sure it will satisfy their fans.
Over
all I wouldn’t say that I like the c.d., but I won’t say I
hated it. I personally wouldn’t spend the money to buy it.
If you are a Cake fan, like alternative style country rock
bands or are into jam bands like Phish or the Dead then
you should get this c.d.

Double Scoop |

A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste
and Houses of the Mole’ by Ministry
Ministry
has been known for years as being the ‘godfathers’ of
industrial music. Industrial music consists of loud guitar
parts, pulsating drumbeats, often-sampled music or sound bites
and the over all dirty grimy feel of the music and it’s scene
as a whole. This style dubbed ‘industrial’ due to the
repetition of the music found in the songs. Before there was
Nine Inch Nails, Pigface or Skinny Puppy there was Ministry.

In 1989
Ministry released this classic recording to punch the
music industry in the ears. The group succeeded and
shortly after spawned a whole new genre of hard rock
music. The band had already amassed a rather large
following which seemed to grow daily as the band toured in
support of this album. With songs like “Breathe” “So What”
and “Burning Inside” Ministry left a stain on the music
industry that will long be remembered and virtually
impossible to erase. To this day this is still the best
record the band recorded and is a staple in the c.d.
collection of practically everyone who loves harder and
heavier music. |

Houses of the Mole’
(parental advisory)
3 out of 5
Ministry frontman Al Jourgensen has a problem with
organized religion and President George W. Bush. In
Houses of the Mole’ he let’s that be known, loud and
clear. The main theme of this recording seems to be the
letter W, with all the song titles starting with the
letter. For example,"WTV," Worthless," and "Worn".
Constant Bush-bashing and anti-religious tones make this
c.d. a big disappointment. It is however the best
recording the band has done in years, so maybe that is a
plus for Ministry fans everywhere. Paul Barker, long time
bassist and the other half of this musical monster is gone
and I feel that it has hurt the song writing process of
the band. If you are a die-hard Ministry fan be sure to
check it out. If you are looking for something new to add
to your c.d. collection keep looking. To find out more

Rock
for Light by Bad Brains 5 out of 5
rating
1991
Caroline Records
Bad Brains
has been and is still one of the most influential bands in
punk rock and rock music in general. The band has had a
turbulent history plagued by break-ups, tour cancellations and
even brief incarcerations. Rock for Light is a greatest
hits of sorts as it has a lot of the bands earlier songs on
it. Songs like “Sailin’ On”, “Banned in D.C.”, “Big Takeover”
show the amazing guitar work of Dr. Know and the wild, lyrical
chatter of singer, H.R.
This c.d.
was an effort by the Cars singer/bassist Ric Ocasek to get the
band some commercial success. While Caroline Records is a
small record company it was a launching pad for some
underground bands onto the main stream music stage. White
Zombie for example saw great success with their release on the
label and then gained stardom just a short time after that
when signing to a bigger record label. Bad Brains had some
success with this c.d. and later went on to sign with Maverick
Records. While the band started to gain some much deserved
notoriety for their own personal style of reggae meets punk
rock the train ride came to an abrupt stop on the tour
supporting the c.d. God of Love. They eventually
reformed and changed the name to Soul Brains due to Maverick
owning the name Bad Brains. I think all of that has changed by
now. I can't find any current web page information on the
band, but googling Bad Brains and Soul Brains will lead you to
various articles and information about the band.
How Do I
Get Mine?
All of the
above c.d.’s can be bought new or used by going to
Amazon.com, your local music sellers or at their
respective webpages. |

create rather than destroy by Byproduct 4.5
out of 5
I
was rather excited to get this c.d. in the mail from the
guitarist Jason. I had heard of the band for quite some time,
but hadn’t had the chance to hear them. Byproduct comes out
guns blazing in what I will call an aggressively cosmic
journey into neurological freedom. The inside artwork contains
a, ‘blueprint of an open mind’ written by the guitarist and
sort of explains what the band is trying to get across in this
recording. I can’t say that this band sounds like any certain
bands in particular, but I can say that they are definitely in
the category of hard, heavy hitting fast paced metal. Fans of
bands like Demon Hunter, Slipknot, Atreyu, and Sepultura will
truly enjoy this band.
I really
like the way the band has the c.d. laid out as far as the
content goes. They blast you with real intense music and then
they seem to give you a few moments to recover before they
bombard you again with bone crushing music. Overall this
recording is intense and very impressive for a band that isn’t
on a record label yet. I stress the word yet, because I think
it’s only a matter of time before a company like Century
Media, Relapse or Victory Records attempts to sign this band
to a recording contact. I highly recommend getting this c.d.
and keeping your eye out for Byproduct in the future.
