Welcome back to another edition of The Audio Nut. I would like to say a big “Thank You” to all of you who have been checking back and making this page one of the fastest growing music review pages on the internet. In this installment we have been able to steal Colonel Lump away from his recording sessions to give us a new read. We also get to introduce Travis T., who will be doing some reviews. Warning Travis is pickier when it comes to music. It will be interesting to see what he has to say in every issue. I would also like to take this moment to ask you to help out the hurricane victims if you haven’t done so already. The links are below.

Franz Ferdinand http://www.franzferdinand.co.uk
You Could Have It So Much Better

2005 Sony

Grade: B
 Reviewed by J Sohn

Franz Ferdinand is back and they pretty much brought the same mix of music that gained them huge American notoriety on their self-titled debut. While a lot of the CD sounds like their other songs; this disc has some really good moments and some very catchy tunes. “This Boy”, “The Fallen”, and “Do You Want To” are all good songs in the soon to be classic Franz style. Expect this disc to do well and plan on hearing from Franz Ferdinand for a few more years (at least).

Project 86 http://www.project86.com
And the Rest Will Follow
2005 Tooth & Nail

Grade: A-
 Reviewed by J Sohn

Project 86 returns for their fifth album and truly embrace their own style and sound yet again. And the Rest Will Follow packs quite a punch with songs like, “Subject to Change”, “All of Me”, “Sincerely Ichabod”, and “Something We Can’t Be”. Andrew Schwab shows again why he is an awesome singer and lyricist. This band is truly one of the best bands out and it is sad that MTV, mainstream radio and the likes look them over so frequently. Bottom line is… If you have ever heard this band then get this CD now. If you haven’t had the chance to embrace what P86 is all about I strongly encourage you to check them out as soon as possible.

Fiona Apple http://www.fiona-apple.com
Extraordinary Machine

2005 Sony

Grade: D
 Reviewed by Travis T.

Cool, my first review for The Audio Nut and I get to listen to Fiona Apple. Ms. Apple is known for looking weird and for trying to match her looks with her music. This chick should give full credit to artists like Tori Amos, Patty Smith and one of J’s favorites P.J. Harvey. Nothing here is original or outstanding. One would think that after taking six years off from the music business that Fiona would have come up with something to set her apart from the norm. To bad that’s not the case here. Don’t get it.

Thoughts of a Predicate Felon (Parental Advisory)

2005 Interscope

Grade: D-
 Reviewed by Travis T.

So, this is what you sound like when you want to be N.W.A. or Ice-T when you grow up. There is a lack of everything on here. No flow when it comes to rapping, no real music or beats to get down to, no originality and nothing tangible to take into your thoughts. Every person who has a guest appearance on this record is better that Yayo himself. Guests include 50 Cent and Eminem to name a couple. I guess this guy just needs to stay in the shadows of G-Unit front man 50 Cent and cash his check when it comes in. Don’t get it.

Anoushka Shankar http://www.anoushkashankar.com
Rise

2005 Angel Records

Grade: B+
 Reviewed by J Sohn

This is a very, very interesting listen. Anoushka is the daughter of the legendary sitar player Ravi Shankar and like her father, has a talent for soothing the soul and capturing your attention with music. Her sitar playing is mystical and charming, and her musical compositions are without a doubt unsurpassed the world over. Rise takes sharp turns and uncanny twists from beginning to end with songs like “Prayer in Passing”, “Mahadeva”, and “Beloved”. I’ll say that this disc is well worth the investment if you are looking for something different to soothe your soul or take your mind off of the rigors of everyday life.

Blast From The Past

Welcome back to the BftP… After taking a month off to feature an awesome CD for an awesome cause, the BftP is back and (hopefully) better than ever. This time we will meditate in some Soundgarden.

Soundgarden
Louder Than Love (Parental Advisory)
1989 A&M

Grade: A
 Reviewed by J Sohn

Louder Than Love was and still is THE best full-length record that Soundgarden ever released. Most fans of the band seemed to take notice when the group burst onto the world scene with their monstrous 1991 release Badmotorfinger, but before there was “Outshined” or “Rusty Cage” there was “Gun”, “Ugly Truth”, “Loud Love”, and “Power Trip”. Ladies and gentleman, this was in fact one of the records that put Seattle on the map. It predates Nirvana’s Nevermind; it was on the streets and in the hands of the colossal underground movement that was about to explode in the early 90’s. You know… the one ‘started’ by Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. Before those bands stormed the dorms and raided the rooms of teens and young adults worldwide bands like Soundgarden, Mudhoney, and Melvins had begun to plant the seeds that so fully bloomed into a musical revolution. I strongly urge fans of Audioslave, Queens of the Stone Age, Tool, and Fall Out Boy to check out this recording. Fans of Chris Cornell or later Soundgarden music (1991 on) should go ahead and add Ultramega OK, Screaming Life/Fopp and Louder Than Love to their music collections.

I.G.M.  http://www.industrialghettometal.com
The Invincible (Phase1) (Parental Advisory)

2005 IGM Records

Grade: A

I.G.M. or Industrial Ghetto Metal strap on the boots and kick listeners’ dead on in their ears with this punishing and incredibly diverse release. The first couple songs show the talent of I.G.M. when it comes to laying down some seriously heavy guitar driven songs, which rival that of earlier Prong or Ministry. Then the hip-hop or ‘ghetto’ side kicks in for a couple songs; think DMX or Lil John (if Lil John knew what heavy music really was). Industrial Ghetto Metal is an excellent name for this group as they truly mix all of the elements of industrial music with the some hardcore rap and some brutal metal guitar riffs. Sure you might have heard bands with similar styles in the past, but I.G.M. doesn’t mix the rap with rock too much, which is a plus in my book. Fans of Biohazard, Body Count or any of the above-mentioned artists will probably enjoy I.G.M.

What’s the Story
http://www.cdbaby.com/essenceoflogic (to buy)

2004 Unsigned

Grade: A

Hailing from the St. Louis, Missouri area Essence of Logic has a knack for twisting and turning their music in just the right fashion producing all that they need to get their mood and message across to listeners. This disc starts off with the track “Barely There” and continues to flow until the last song “In the Summer”. Standout songs on here: “Swing It”, “Afraid of the Light”, and the title track “What’s the Story”. If I had any objection to what E.O.L. is doing it would be that a couple of the songs are a tad bit too long. Of course I’m sure that they come across quite nicely in the bands live performances, which I here are entertaining and packed full of energy. Actually after a couple listens you don’t really notice the length of the songs too much, but I think it might hurt if the group wanted to get those particular songs on radio for airplay. This 10-song disc is chocked full of heavy melodic rock that will remind you of bands like 311, Incubus and Phunk Junkies.

The Colonel's Corner

Clowns, Fire Eaters, and a Parachute Woman
By Col. Lump

The discussion always returns to the Stones. Those fossilized, Geritol popping, gout suffering geraniums of rock 'n roll's past. And some say, rock 'n roll's present. Are the Stones still legit, the question goes? I don't care. At least they still release new material every other leap year. They continue to generate lively, well thought out debates among various factions of flakes forty years after their conception. And like most survivors of The Sixties, (read, big letters) the Stones experienced some soaring heights. The Rock And Roll Circus was one such moment.

Most of the mystical allure of the Rock And Roll Circus vaporized thanks to the mid-nineties (read, small letters) release of the show on video. Now the Circus is on DVD, complete with all the commentary and deleted scenes we've come to enjoy from the media.

Naturally the show is wonderful. I was surprised to learn Tony Iommi's appearance with Jethro Tull was mimed, bursting that particular hot air elephant. The Who tears the tent down. In 1968 the directors of the show were still naive enough to believe that Taj Mahal and band could enter Britain without passports if only they wore business suits. Luckily, they survived deportation long enough to lay down some nasty blues. I now realize the genius of John Lennon keeping Yoko in a black bag on stage.

How 'bout them Stones? It is understood that their performance started at 2:00 am after a grueling 14-hour day that saw the band acting not only as headliner, but booking agent, producer, road manager, and promoter. While Keith looks slightly sluggish and Brian is long gone bye-bye, the performance is fueled by the airtight rhythm section of Bill and Charlie, and the energized stage antics and vocal efforts of Mick. This is the fabled original Rolling Stones lineup preserved one last time for the ages.

While the various performances take center stage, I have to agree with Pete Townsend that the most compelling revelation about the Rock And Roll Circus is that a bunch of smashed musicians at the height of their powers could pull off such a production. Imagine the logistics of such an endeavor today!

In my little community the local musicians presented a hodgepodge showcase of local talent, charged $3 a head, sold gallons of warm beer, and billed it a "festival". I think the Rolling Stones were correct calling such gatherings a "circus".

7 Questions With...

Jonathan Clay

Q. I just saw that some of your music will be included on MTV's The Real World 2006. How did that come about and is there any chance that we'll see you on the show?
A. Yeah I’m really excited about that. My booking manager gave me some names of some people I should send press kits to. They liked what they heard, and said that they would be interested in having my music on the next season of Real World. After that it was all contracts, which just confuse me. It’s still so fresh, I have a hard time believing it sometimes, and feel very fortunate to have gotten the opportunity. You won't see me on the show; you'll just hear my music.

Q. What would you like to tell us about your CD?
A. It's really my first attempt at a legitimate recording of my music.
Over all, I’m really pleased with the outcome, but of course there are still some things I would like to go back and change. I guess that’s normal though, and something I have to get used to. It’s a hard thing to transpose the sound you hear in your head, to what’s actually recorded.
There is a different mood I feel when I play each song. If I can convey those moods to people when they hear the tracks, then I’m just that much closer to where I want to be.

Q. How's it going with juggling college and a musical career that is starting to take off quickly?
A. It’s really tough. I want to focus on music full time. And for the most part, I do. Everyone talks about a "back-up" plan. I kind of feel like if you approach something with a "back-up" plan in the back of your mind, you may not go at it with all you've got. Being on campus has been a great experience though, and opened up a lot of doors. If I could go back, I probably wouldn't change anything.

Q. Who would you say is one of your biggest influences both musical and non-musically?
A. I have a lot of influences. First and foremost, my biggest musical influence would be John Mayer. Musically, my whole perspective changed when I saw him live. It was in 2000, before he was huge, and it was a small venue. An experience I will always be grateful for. Growing up I listened to a lot of Eric Clapton, James Taylor, and Stevie Ray Vaughan. Some more contemporary influences are Damien
Rice, Howie Day, Ari Hest, Gavin DeGraw, and although you may not hear it, I listen to a whole lot of Coldplay.

Non-Musically, my family has a lot to do with what I've accomplished.
I always looked up to my dad, being that he was a musician himself.
He taught me how to play guitar when I was 14, although I really didn’t get serious until a few years later. I also go to church too. When I feel all spread out, it always seems to help me focus.

Q. What are you listening to in your car/home stereo these days?
A. Lately I've been hooked on Aqualung. He definitely has some infectious tunes. I've also been listening to a lot of Citizen Cope,
Death Cab, some sweet 80's jams like "Mr. Roboto", and a bunch of local guys.

Q. If you could be anyone in world history, beside yourself, who would you be and why?
A. I really don't know, I got a D in history. I would name a musician, but that's way too easy.

Q. Is there anything else that you'd like to share with us about you and/or your music?
A. I can't really think of anything too interesting, but I would like to say thank you to everyone who is supportive of what I do, and helping me spread the word about my music. That means the world to me.

promise! promises!

Q. Who are you and what do you do in the band?
A. I’m Sebastian and I am the bass player for promises! promises!, also I do all financial things in this band and I’m responsible for our myspace site and all contacts for the bands.

Q. How did you come up with and decide on the name promises! promises!?
A. The story of our name? We try to give you promises. In the whole world you get promises, but they are not really true.... we give you the soundtrack of your life/ summer… I promise!

Q. Is there anything you'd like to tell us about the CD that you have just finished recording?
A. Yeah! We record it in south Spain with an awesome producer. In Germany you have all the time really bad weather. As we went to Spain we have 3 weeks sunshine and you can hear it on the record.

Q. Who would you say is one of your biggest influences both musically and non-musical?
A. We all listen to different bands. We like Jimmy Eat World, My Chemical Romance, Hot Hot Heat, Bloc Party, The Strokes, Kings of Leon, Beatsteaks (g), Madsen (g) etc… we all have no real jobs and give our whole lives for the music we made. This is our lifestyle.

Q. If you could be anyone in world history, beside yourself, who would you, be? Why?
A. I want to be all the dead rock stars who killed themselves. Then I would prevent theirs deaths

Q. What are you listening to in your car/home stereo?
A. Nephew... they are from Denmark and they are really great.

Q. Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about promises! promises!?
A. We shot a video in September and we want to come over the United States and give you our music. Our dream is a tour through all states.

Auralast

Q. Who are you and what do you do in the band?
A. I am Donna, the lead singer

Q. How did you come up with and decide on Auralast as the name of the band?
A. Auralast means eternal life; you never die.

Q. Who would you say are some of your biggest influences musically?
A. Biggest music influences: Sevendust, Disturbed, and so many more, there is not enough pages to list.

Q. What can we expect from Auralast by the end of the year?
A. This year we expect to write and complete our second CD.

Q. What are you listening to these days in your car/home stereo?
A. I've got Disturbed, Believe in my car, Michael has Sevendust, Seasons, Tim has Pantera, Greatest Hits.

Q. If you could be anyone in history, beside yourself, who would you be? Why?
A. She may not have been a person but she was a goddess...ISIS.

Q. Is there anything else you'd like to share with us about Auralast?
A. We’ve been talking to Seven Bros. records (Sevendust) we hope to start negotiations early next year when they get back from Europe. We also hope to do some tour dates with them.
