The Audio Nut

Vol. I Issue 26

Welcome back to another installment of The Audio Nut. We are quickly approaching the end of 2005 and putting the wraps on a pretty good year for music fans. I have been very impressed by the amounts of email that come in on a weekly basis, and I feel pretty fortunate to converse back and forth with so many music lovers from all over the world.

We have some brand new message boards that I hope you all will find useful in learning about new music and sharing some music you love with others. If you have a different perspective on something you saw reviewed in The Audio Nut again please feel free to post a review yourself on the message boards. And don’t forget if you are in a band or are an artist that wants more people to know who you are put some of your info on the boards as well.

Remember all comments and questions are always welcome.

Reviews
Neil Diamond
12 Songs
2005 Sony

Grade: A-

http://www.neildiamondhomepage.com

Yeah, so I know what you are thinking… ‘Why in the heck would I be interested in a Neil Diamond CD?’ Well my music consuming friends I felt the same way before I approached this CD. It has some good and bad things going for it. Honestly, the good and bad things are the same things. Hype: This disc has tons of hype surrounding it. When ever we see that happen either the recording will be nothing short of amazing or it will be a pathetic waste of time. It also has Neil Diamond pairing up with Rick Rubin; who is known for working with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, Slayer and the Beastie Boys just to name a few. This of course could be good or bad; it just depends on how much input Rubin has on the recording process. Luckily for Diamond and listeners Rubin is said to have little input on the recordings, just basically offering some constructive criticism and putting his name in the credits. “Hell Yeah”, “Captain of My Shipwreck”, and “Delirious Love” are all pretty good songs that show the pure talent that Diamond has as a songwriter. Overall this CD was better than I thought it would be and is worth a listen.

Demon Hunter
The Triptych
2005 Solid State Records

Grade: A

http://www.demonhunter.net
http://www.thethirdwar.com (check this site out…very cool!)

Ladies and gentlemen, this could be the CD of the year when it comes to heavy music. Demon Hunter scores a hat-trick with their third and most unyielding release on Solid State Records. The Triptych is great display of Demon Hunter throwing down the gauntlet and unleashing some pure fist pumping heavy metal in their own style. Songs like “Undying”, “Not I”, “Fire To My Soul”, and the version of Prong’s “Snap Your Fingers, Snap Your Neck” are all bright spots on a disc that really doesn’t have any dull moments on it. So far the band continues to progress into a good direction with their music and lyrics on every release and I expect more of the same in the future. This CD will be a great addition for fans of bands like Living Sacrifice, Lamb of God, Project 86, and Soulfly.

Note: You can read an interview with Ryan Clark from Demon Hunter in issue 7 and read a review of the first two Demon Hunter CD’s in Issue 1

Nickelback
All the Right Reasons
2005 Roadrunner Records

Grade: D

http://www.nickelback.com

I guess the only thing that keeps these guys from being a cheesy country music act is that they can sell more records being a cheesy rock band. If you took away the distortion on the guitars and added some cowboy boots and a few shiny belt buckles Nickelback would be on their way to the CMT awards annually. None-the-less they are back with their same old dull, predicable lyric, basic radio friendly music and typical song structures. I guess that is what they are aiming for and it is what they are good at. I just can’t stand the vocals or the music. Nothing on this CD is impressive, groundbreaking or worth a second listen. I know that this band will sell tons of records and has done so in the past, but really, why in the heck does this stuff sell? Sure, you can send me hate mail about this one, but I honestly think it is boring and uneventful. It’s almost hard to believe that this band is on the same record label that brought us Slipknot, Sepultura and Annihilator.

My Morning Jacket
Z
2005 Ato records

Grade: C+

http://www.mymorningjacket.com

I haven’t heard any music from My Morning Jacket until this release so comparing this disc to anything they have done before isn’t possible. Nothing I heard on here really brings me to the notion of wanting to rush out and purchase any of their previous work. My Morning Jacket reminds me of the Steve Miller Band, Radiohead, The Killers and The Flaming Lips. “What a Wonderful Man”, “Anytime”, and “Knot Comes Loose” are good songs, but overall the disc didn’t live up to my expectations. Don’t take me wrong, it’s a good record, just not great.

Fans of any of the above mentioned bands will probably enjoy trying on My Morning Jacket.

Wolf Parade
Apologies to the Queen Mary
2005 Subpop

Grade: C

http://www.subpop.com

I read somewhere that Isaac Brock, the singer of Modest Mouse, pointed this band out to someone at Subpop and the rest is...well hopefully is history. When listening to this record one could easily get the impression that they are listening to a Modest Mouse CD. Yep, not much different, except that Wolf Parade (while a diverse group) isn’t as diverse as the Mouse when it comes to music and overall content. This CD is basically a mix of everything you have heard on college radio over the past few years that doesn’t contain the words ‘emo, screamo, or post hardcore’ in the genre description. Take The Arcade Fire, mix in a little Beck, Dead Sixties and throw in a dash of Bloc Party for good measure and you will come up with Wolf Parade.

Blast From The Past
Uriah Heep
Demons and Wizards

1972 Mercury Records

Grade: A

Whoa, we are digging deep for this little gem! A lot of people don’t know who Uriah Heep is/was and most people probably don’t care either, but this record is a great release from the band and is a favorite of many fans. With songs like “Easy Livin’”, “Traveler in Time”, and “The Wizard” Uriah Heep had a knack for bringing mystical and spacey lyrics and subject matter into their music. This is a really good recording and it sounds a lot better re-mastered on disc then it did on those old fashioned vinyl records. If you had the album get the CD it is worth the cash. If you never heard of or heard this band and you like groups like Deep Purple, The Mars Volta, Led Zeppelin, and KISS then check them out; I think it’ll be worth your time.

The Street
The Street

2005 Perris Records

Grade: A

http://www.thestreetmusic.com

The Street bring a heavy and melodic mix of music on this self-titled release. In a sound that I would describe as new Metallica meets old Bon Jovi, The Street has a flair for coming up with some seriously contagious and catchy songs; not to mention some stellar guitar and bass riffs. “Thump,” “Grip”, “Hurt Me Good” display the talents of this group and are great tracks. Fans of Velvet Revolver, Y&T (yep, I just mentioned Y&T baby!), Nickelback, Hoobastank or fans of 70’s, 80’s and early 90’s rock should enjoy hitting The Street.

Girl Without Fear
Mix Messages

2005 Deep Pocket Records

Grade: A

http://www.girlwithoutfear.com

Girl Without Fear vocalist Demetria has a tremendous voice and is now one of my favorite singers. She has a smooth, mellifluous voice that would fit into any style of music. That fact is evident on Mix Messages with the various styles of songs like “Avalanche”, “Sundown”, “Stretch”, and “Look Like Angels”. This recording is an exceptional mix of electronic meets pop with some soul and a little bit of folk tossed in. The songwriting is top-notch and I am truly expecting to hear more from and about Girl Without Fear in the mainstream in the future. Fans of groups like Garbage, Deee-Lite, the Cardigans and Stereo Deluxx will absolutely love Girl Without Fear.

Gravel n.y.c.
6-song demo

2004 Unsigned

Grade: A

http://www.gravelrock.com

Gravel n.y.c. (I’m honestly not sure if the n.y.c. is supposed to accompany the name, but that’s how I’ve seen it in various places) are a heavy guitar driven band in the vein of bands like Prong, Motorhead and Iron Maiden. This 6-song disc is packed full of pulsating rhythms and sturdy musicianship. The group amalgamates a wide range of influences nicely into their own sound and style on this recording. Check out the songs, “Affliction”, “Binge”, and “Flesh To Bone” for some good examples of this groups talent and approach songwriting.

This disc is a must get for fans of hard rocking, guitar driven music.

7 Questions With...
Zakk Z from New Society of Anarchists

Q. Who are you and what do you do in the band?
A. My name is Zakk. I play bass and vocals in N.S.O.A. (NEW SOCIETY OF ANARCHISTS). Arlo plays rhythm guitar, Jason plays lead guitar, and Augie plays drums.

Q. How did you come up with and decide on New Society of Anarchists for the bands' name?
A. F**k everyone, f**k everything. It's a good name because it pisses people off. It's not really all about our politics, but if that's what it means to someone else...more power to them. It just represents freedom to me. Do what you want, live how you want, believe in yourself, and don't believe in anything or anyone else.

Q. What would you like to tell us about your latest CD, "Come out Swingin"?
A. Well I think it's one of our better CD's. We recorded it ourselves and produced it ourselves and the sound we captured and the energy captured on this CD is f**kin' incredible. The CD is called "Come Out Swingin'". Turkey Vulture Records put it out which is a new underground indie label out of the Midwest. We're touring with it and people are really diggin' the songs. It turned out very well.

Q. I see that you just got off of a pretty lengthy tour. Is there anything you'd like to share with us about it and what are some of your plans for the rest of the year?
A. Touring is always great you just get to play every night for new people and there's always this sort of chaos about it because your basically, when you're on these underground tours, a homeless person for how ever long you're on the road. We just did the West Coast, Midwest, and upper East Coast. Some shows were good, some shows were better. The money sucks because there is none, but the people that come out to the shows and get into the band and support us by buying the merch and going off in front of the stage (if there is a stage). You know those are the people that believe in the band. For those people NSOA is like their big loud screaming "F**K YOU" to the world, and for the most part that's why we keep going.

Q. What can we expect from you guys on the next CD, and is there a time frame that you have for its release?
A. We are working on the next CD right now. We got 11 of the 18 songs learned. We're gonna do it ourselves again. The new songs are really heavy and dark. I'm thinking of calling the CD "FOR THE FORGOTTEN" and I’m hoping to be recording by January but there's no rush on it.

Q. If you could be anyone in world history, beside yourself, who would you be and why?
A. Gichin Funakushi, because the man's self-discipline was tremendous and the art he spent his life perfecting was extraordinary.

Q. Is there anything else that you'd like to share with us about NSOA?
A. Thanks for the interview. Check out our web site
www.newsocietyofanarchists.com and the Turkey Vulture Records site at www.turkeyvulturerecords.com. Check out some of the other bands on the label...NO CLASS CITIZEN, MARY'S C*NT, BAR WH*RE, etc...Check out YESTERDAY'S YOUTH, POUND FOR POUND, BLOOD IN BLOOD OUT, MIDWEST HARDCORE. Check out our latest CD "COME OUT SWINGIN''" from NEW SOCIETY OF ANARCHISTS on TURKEY VULTURE RECORDS.
