 The Audio Nut

The Audio Nut

Vol. 2 Issue 1

So, this is the first issue for 2006 huh? I think it’s safe to say that the year end issue went over well. I didn’t get a single complaint on my best of list, which was great. I mean it was great that I didn’t get any complaints, not that the list was great. I mean it was a pretty good list if I do say so myself, but…ahhh; anyway. I hope that 2006 will be bigger and better for all of us. Thanks for checking back and remember if you haven’t signed up for the email updates I encourage you to do so today. I am looking into trying to get some prizes sent out to people on the mailing list and one of the things that the prize providers like is a big old long list of people who check out the page on a regular basis. Your email address will not be sold or ‘lent’ to anyone else; it will only be used for The Audio Nut updates. Also, while I am thinking about it there are some pretty cool announcements coming soon, so you might want to stay tuned. Well, enough of my senseless rambling, let’s get to why you are here…

Remember all comments and questions are always welcome.

 Reviews
INXS
Switch

2005 Epic Records

http://www.inxs.com

Grade: C+

I admit it, I was one of those people who would tune in to see what was happening on the Rock Star/INXS reality show when it was on TV. I was interested in how this forgotten band was going to try and replace the key ingredient to their previous success (original singer Michael Hutchence died a few years back) I grew tired of mediocrity that every participant seemed to wallow in. I grew tired of the shows’ hosts Dave Navarro (guitarist for Jane’s Addiction) and Brooke Burke (a so-so calendar girl). I grew tired of the horrible renditions these poor saps would do of other famous or popular songs. By the end of the shows’ run I had just stopped watching it due to boredom.

Now with me being a person who only liked some of the INXS stuff and not really a big fan I try to approach this new release with an unbiased and fair opinion. After a couple listens I must say that I don’t like it. It sounds like a pop-alternative band that is trying to sound like to many other bands. I guess they are supposed to sound like INXS, but I thought maybe the singer would sound like a new singer and not a guy who was trying to be the old singer. Basically, it’s boring in my opinion, but I am sure that plenty of people will enjoy it. Maybe the guys from INXS should have taken the ‘top 10’ performers from their TV show and just recorded a CD of them doing the old INXS songs; that probably would have been the best move.

Brian Eno
Another Day on Earth

2005 Rykodisc

http://www.enoshop.co.uk

Grade: A

If you aren’t familiar with Brian Eno or his musical history, let’s just say he has been a big factor in many of the most popular albums in history. With a résumé that so spectacular listeners should expect a near flawless effort from Brian on this recording. And that is what they get. Eno has penned and recorded some of his best work and truly captures the imagination of listeners with, Another Day on Earth.

From the opening moments of, “This” until he frees your senses at the end of “Bone Bomb” Brian Eno takes you on a spacious, cosmic journey and cradles your mind like a delicate and precious gem. I have read and heard reviews of this disc that slam Eno for his ‘average’ or ‘overdone’ efforts, but yet, those are some of the same people that praised Keith and Mick when the Stones put out their newest CD last year. So, believe what you will, but if you believe me this album by Brian Eno is a pleasant and worthwhile listen. Check it out when you get the chance. Fans of stuff like Ivy, Pink Floyd, Enya, and similar types should really enjoy Another Day on earth with Brian Eno.

Yellowcard
Lights and Sounds

2006 Capitol Records

http://www.yellowcardrock.com

Grade: B-

Yellowcard is back with the follow-up release to their platinum selling debut Ocean Avenue, and they have grown a bit. The group has expanded their lyrical content and sound to reach a wider audience. The first track, “Three Flights Up”, is a pretty cool instrumental track. Songs like, “Waiting Game” and “Lights and Sounds” give the band a more unique sound, but songs like, “Down On My Head”, “Two Weeks From Twenty”, and “City of Devils” tend to sound more like bands like Green Day or Weezer. Overall, it’s an alright release from the group, nothing ground breaking or mind-blowing; but I don’t think the ‘scene’ that embraces this group would let them expand to that level.

The Strokes
First Impressions of Earth (Parental Advisory)

2006 RCA Records

http://www.thestrokes.com

Grade: D

The term ‘kicking a dead horse’ comes to mind when I hear this release from The Strokes. The band was/is pretty much a one hit wonder with their song “Last Night” off of their debut Is This It. The Strokes have continued with the same monotone vocals and boring music on this release. They don’t seem to care about expanding their style or songwriting. Instead the just dump a load of overused crap onto the listeners and expect you to indulge in their waste. I give the drummer credit for trying to play new drum beats. He had been stuck in the ’White Stripes’ mode of playing the same thing on nearly every song in the past. I don’t know if they got a new drummer or just got this guy some drum lessons. Nonetheless, that’s the only improved part of the band. This disc just drags on in a pathetic rut of mediocrity. I would urge you to keep looking if you had your eye on this album.

 Blast From The Past
While this isn’t a blast from the past; it’s a review that needs to be included in this page. So I have chosen to slide it in this section. Expect a BFTP in the next issue. Until then check out this book.

Debra DeSalvo (Artists Bio Page)
The Language of the Blues: from Alcorub to Zuzu

2006 Billboard Books

http://www.debradesalvo.com

So, you call yourself a ‘Bluesman’, but you don’t really know about the terminology or what they reference in the songs lyrics. You aren’t quite sure what Hokum or Hoodoo is or what “Riding the blinds” means. Well luckily for you and every other aspiring ‘Bluesman’ around the world, Debra DeSalvo has just given you a chance to understand the slang and to become more authentic in your quest. “The Language of the Blues: From Alcorub to Zuzu” is jam packed full of definitions, examples and stories that have been in the Blues and it’s language from day one. In this effort Debra has gone through great lengths to meet with Blues legends and to research this topic. The result… an outstanding body of work that is sure to entertain as well as inform any and all that have an interest in this original American creation known as the Blues. Dr. John did the forward and offered an insightful peek into the history of the Blues language which compliments Debra’s work greatly. This book is a must have for people who are into music and even American history. I myself have learned quite a few things by reading it. I strongly recommend adding this masterpiece to your library today.

NOTE: Check out Debra DeSalvo in past issues of The Audio Nut such as Issue 30 and Issue 13

Auralast
Casualty
2004 Unsigned

http://www.auralast.com

Grade: A

I feel bad for taking so long to get this band in an issue of The Audio Nut. Auralast is an excellent quartet from Arizona that blends harmony and heaviness as well as any other group around. This ten track CD is a superb display of the talents that every member from Auralast brings to the table. The bone crushing rhythms are precise with the musical mastery of Michael, Tim and Steve; and the vocals are at times mesmerizing with the sweet pitch of the groups’ singer Donna. The band is working on their second CD as we speak and from what I have heard it will top this disc. (Which I would find hard to do, if I hadn’t heard some of the new songs already)

Be sure to check out the bands website for information on how to get this CD and I am expecting you to get it soon.

NOTE: Check out an interview with Auralast in Issue 25

All Grown Up
Behind The Service Star

2003 Dakota Records

http://www.myspace.com/allgrownup

Grade: A

All Grown Up puts out some full blown and full grown energy on this release. “Close the Door”, “Last Row, Lights On”, and “Drama in the Jail Cell” are all upbeat and solid rocking tracks. I have heard a few people mention seeing them in the NY area and rumor has it that the live show is a high-impact good time waiting to be had by all. If the band can exhume half the energy on stage that is represented on this disc I can only imagine what a great time it would be to take in an AGU show. I don’t know if they are still on Dakota Records, but for the labels sake I hope so because these guys have some talent when it comes to writing good songs. This disc is well worth the listen and I hope you would think so too. Hit them up on their myspace page to check the availability of this disc.

Idol Hands
Black and White
2005 Talwar Records

http://www.idolhands.org

Grade: A

By saying this disc features a plethora of influences would be an understatement. The guys in Idol Hands must have a massive musical history when it comes to bands they like and look up to. Black and White consists of everything from supersonic guitar riffs to precious piano playing and even includes plenty of groove and rock. “Edge of a Knife”, Angel”, “Gas Station Celebrity”, and “Perfectly” all show the wide range of styles that this group is incorporating into a sound all their own. A very good listen, every song is good. I would expect to hear more from and about this New York based quintet for years to come.

 7 Questions With...
Purple Pam

Q. How did you decide on going with the name Purple Pam?

I didn't decide. It was given to me and I'm very happy about it, obviously because I kept it. Back when I did the Blues Jams on Bleecker St. in New York's West Village, I was a rocker from the East side which is the side of CBGB's and Continental and Arlene's Grocery. "The other side" is land of The Bitter End, Kenny's Castaways, and Terra Blues. That's where the "Bridge and Tunnel" peeps go and a lot of Blues and Jazz. So here comes purple ass me, crossing over and able to sing and adapt to a whole new world of music. I'm versatile that way. It was at the Bitter End, where Simone, a waitress there called me Purple Pam and everyone else followed suit. I had just discovered purple, Manic Panic hair dye, so with having purple hair and clothes, the West side wasn’t used to purple and a rock image in a blues jazz world, which makes me very identifiable. Even homeless people on the street will shout, "Yo, Purple!" Who's gonna remember my name or band name? It's the "purple chick" they will remember.

Q. What are your plans for 2006?

I just moved out to Brooklyn, from New York Shitty. Trying to get out a music video I did for a song of mine, "Take Me Away", which was in a horror film last year, Disorder, directed by Jack Smith, as well as my video. I just need to get it edited and I will be shooting another one this March or April, for my song, "Green Eggs and Pam (Eat Me!)", which will be directed by Lloyd Kaufman of Troma. I was just in their latest movie, Poultrygeist. I wrote my own little part and the song for Green Eggs will be in the film as well. Also, I've been co-writing and performing on a new rock show, Detention Lounge, NYC-"A heavy metal Hee-Haw". A half hour episode has already been shot, edited and MTV2 has it and we're looking at Comedy Central. We are shooting a skit for a second episode this Saturday. Last but not least, recording more tunes. Who knows what else can pop up?

Q. What would you like to tell us about your parts in Troma films?

Well, I can tell you what and where they are:

My first was a casting call on the back of the Village Voice, looking for extras with colorful hair, tattoos and piercings. That's me. Got called back and got a part. The film: Tromeo and Juliet. I am in the beginning of the movie in a dance club and I'm dancing in every scene up front, wearing a purple lace dress. Lloyd loved my facial expressions and I was the only one in the crowd who followed directions, so Lloyd gave me another part which was a small speaking part. Twenty minutes near the end, it is outside and a character's arm gets chopped off and I'm with a few other girls, and I say, "It's another New York thing!" I was told that I was gonna be a "slutty girl" and to dress the part. That was easy, but it was August, so I figured the other girls would wear black bra tops and bike shorts. I was right, so I wore short purple jean cut offs, purple bathing suit top with a sheer purple mesh top with lace up, knee length boots and of course, my freshly purple bangs...in order to stand out and I DID!

Second Troma film was Citizen Toxie. I was in the Diaper Mafia and I have a sword fight with Lardass and Toxie crams a Mexican Flag up my nose that comes out the top of my head. I also have two songs in the movie. "Laying On Your Grave", which is during the scene with Tito, the retard, shooting heroine in an alley and "Too Long" in the scene where Sarah and Lardass have sex with a block of cheddar cheese.

My song, "Kick In The Head" is in their Tales From the Crapper film and Troma directed my video for it. They put my video on EVERY new DVD that came out on Troma as a bonus! I feel the love in Tromaville!!

Last, but not the end, Poultrygeist. I wrote my own part. I get my fake t**ties plucked out from a chicken zombie. That's all I'll say. I don't want to give it away. When I do the video for Green Eggs and Pam, they are gonna put flashes of my scene mixed in my video. I can’t wait!!!!!! I LOVE TROMA!!!!!!

Q. What would you say has been one of your influences both musically and non musical?

Musically- In the beginning, Ann Wilson of Heart, Stevie Nicks, Linda Ronstadt and Mavis Staples. I do have a 5 octave range, you know. That's influences as far as vocals go. In just musical interest, from the 60's and 70's, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Heart, Aerosmith, Judas Priest. Much more, but that gives you an idea. In the 80's, Jane's Addiction, Sound Garden and Alice In Chains. As far as what influences and moves me now, is ONLY INDIE!!!! If it weren't for Mike of Coded, I wouldn't have discovered SCRUB RADIO!!! I can't believe that there is still good music going on. I thought it was gone forever, but "indie" is where it is at! It's addicting. I come home and right away I tune in to Scrubradio.com and also to Cygnus Radio.

Q. If you could be anyone in world history, besides yourself, who would you be and why?

Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson. I would spend ALL of my money, and then commit suicide.

Q. What are you listening to these days?

It all goes back to the indie world, like Hedspin, from Chicago and Psycotron, from right here in my own hood! Other scrubradio bands, Drop Dead Syndicate, St. Madness, Callbox, Family Force 5, Anadies, Mastermind, Nest Of Idiots, Harry Silk, St8jaket, Unknown, Coded, Immortally Committed. I have many metal mix CD's I've made and I listen in my Walkman when I'm walking 6 hours a day.

Q. Is there anything else you would like to tell us about yourself and the band?

Well, I think that would require more detailed questions from you, hon. Just send them to me when you're ready.

NOTE: Purple Pam received the ‘Readers Choice Award’ as best artist of 2005. You can also check out a review of her music in Issue 22

Nest Of Idiots

Image hosted by Photobucket.comQ. Who are you and what do you do in the band?

A. I am Mike Reardon and I am the singer for the band Nest Of Idiots

Q. How did you come up with the name Nest of Idiots?

A. I was sitting around one night and try to put all these words together to make up a band and the Nest hit me and then came "Idiot" cause I can be one. So with a bunch of guys we are the Nest of Idiots.

Q. What would you say are some of your goals for NOI in 2006 and beyond?

A. To finish our CD and shop it everywhere. Just to have fun is good for me.

Q. If you could be anyone in world history, besides yourself, who would you be? Why?

A. The pope...Cause he's the closest to god and I’m trying to get a hold of him!

Q. Who would you say is one of your biggest influences both musically and non-musical?

A. Frank Zappa, Al Pacino, (Black) Sabbath, my whole family and friends are the most biggest influence in my life right now.

Q. What are you listening to these days in your car/home stereo?

A. I mother earth, Family Force 5,Purple Pam, Shadows Fall, Danko Williams I could go on!

Q. Is there anything else you'd like to share with us about Nest of Idiots?

A. Well besides finishing our CD we are looking for a new bassist; big stuff coming up in 2006 for us, many shows and lots of fun!

Fallen Under

Q. Who are you and what do you do in the band?

A. Peyton Dowdy, and I play guitar.

Q. How did you come up with and decide on the name Fallen Under?

A. Eh, there is no real exciting answer to this question. We had a
show coming up and didn't really have a name for the band. Our other guitar
player(not with the band anymore) came up with it randomly and we used it
for the show and that was about 3 years ago so it kinda stuck. We really
need to come up with a better story than that.

Q. What would you like to share with us about your upcoming CD "Tales from
the Creepy House"?

A. "Tales From the Creepy House" is a 6-song EP which we feel captures
all aspects of our music. We take a lot of pride in having a diverse sound
and trying to do something a little different with each song.

The EP itself are all songs that we have written in the last 6 months after
going through a number of line-up changes and some tough personal
experiences as a band. It is something reflected in some of the harder
edged tracks such as "Bend the Needle" and "Nothing".

Q. What are some of your goals for the band?

A. Our main goal is the same as every other band's main goal. We want
to be able to sustain ourselves off of playing music. We want this band to
be able to be our full time job. We want to be able to tour and make
records that we like and hopefully other people like too. Being in a band
is a lot of fun and we all love the music but every musician wants to "make
it". Even if making it is sustaining a touring career for the next 10 years
and never being a mainstream band.

Q. If you could be anyone in world history who would you be and why?

A. Man, this is a random question. Whatever I answer here now is
going to seem stupid when I think about it again. There are a few people I
could go with here. I have an admiration for Johnny Cash and everything he
did musically and how long of a career he had. Plus the man could wear all
black all the time. I've also been watching the HBO series Rome lately and
even though Julius Caesar gets killed by his "friends", he still had an
amazing life. To be idolized and hated by so many people at the same time
would be an interesting thing to experience.

Q. What are you listening to these days?

A. This question is something that might take awhile to answer! I
absolutely love music and my life revolves around it. The stuff I have been
listening to the most lately would have to be an unsigned band from
Pennsylvania called Malvado
http://www.malvadoband.com and Five.Bolt.Main,
which is Chris Volz's, the former singer of Flaw, new band. I'm also a huge
Nonpoint fan and their new album, "To the Pain" is awesome. A couple other
things a little more on the eclectic side are Murder By Death and Shooter
Jennings.

Q. Is there anything else you'd like to share with us about Fallen Under?

A. "Tales From the Creepy House" comes out January 3rd, 2006 and you
can check out a preview of it on our myspace page which is
http://www.myspace.com/fallenunder. We will be touring as much as possible
in 2006 to support the EP.

Choking Susan

Q. Who are you and what do you do in the band?

A. COLLEEN CAFFEINE, SINGER ,SONGWRITER, ASS KISSER

Q. How did you come up with the name Choking Susan?

A. IT'S FROM AN OLD PORNO MOVIE

Q. What are some of your plans for the group in 2006?

A. WELL WE ARE GOING TO TRY TO STOP HUNGER, OUR OWN BY MAKING SOME MONEY. PLAY ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE

Q. Who would you say has been one of your influences both musically and non-musical?

A. MUSICALLY, THE RAMONES. NON-MUSICALLY ,THE RAMONES CUZ THEY WEREN'T THE GREATEST MUSICIANS

Q. If you could be anyone in world history, besides yourself, who would you be? Why?

A. DOLLY PARTON CUZ SHE HAS BIG BOOBS

Q. What are you listening to these days in your car/home stereo?

A. THE NEW YORK DOLLS, THE DISTILERS,RANCID

Q. Is there anything else you'd like to tell us about Choking Susan?

A. YES , WE ARE ALL GETTING CLOSER TO DEATH..EVEN MORE CLOSER NOW, NOW EVEN MORE CLOSER...
