Vol. 2 Issue 9

Welcome back to the page! I was going to solely run underground and unsigned bands in this issue, but I was able to get my hands on some really good new records, so I had to bring them to your attention. The question I posed to readers in the last issue went fairly well. I have gotten plenty of emails with your input and thoughts about some reality TV and its use of music as the theme. You can read what some of you had to say about it by checking out Rock N Reality TV in the message board forum. I will be drawing a winners name and contacting them by July 17th. Thank you to all who sounded out on this topic.

I was also lucky enough to have contact with The Great Kat and live to tell about it. You can read that interview as well. If you get time sign up for the updates and reminders that I send out. Also, If you have a RSS reader you can get our entertainment feed at http://sportznetwork.com/rss/entertainment.xml also if you have a my yahoo account you can click below to add our stories to your myyahoo page.

Muse
Black Holes and Revelations
2006

Grade: A

http://www.muse.mu

Plenty of Americans took notice to Muse with their last release and I hope that even more will do the same this time around. The band only faces on real problem with the American audience. They are too talented to get respect… does that make sense? The music seems to be too in-depth to capture the ears of those poor old emo/screamo kids who seem to like their music out of key and full of parental hate. The band isn’t cheesy enough or whiny enough to take hold of the rock charts like Stained or Nickelback. And surely they aren’t heavy enough to mosh with the Ozzfest kids. So, where are they going to get an expanded audience? That my friend is a gre3at question. All I can say is, it starts with you. This CD is truly a great journey into aural pleasure. This British trio truly has what it takes to pen musical masterpieces.

While Black Holes and Revelations, has moments reminiscent to their three previous releases it brings a whole new chapter to the table. I hope that “Assassin” is release as a single in the US, because I think it would probably be the best one to gain some of the radio listening people who buy music. “Knights of Cydonia”, is currently making its way onto many stations and is probably one of the more peculiar and original sings in these stations’ formats. Do yourself a favor and get this disc, it is worth the money.

Johnny Cash
American V: A Hundred Highways
2006 American Records

Grade: A

http://www.johnnycash.com

It’s almost sad listening to this, the final Johnny Cash record. Or so it seems… the really sad thing about this record coming out after the death of a true American legend, is that some record label is making money off of a deceased person. I know it happens all the time and plenty of artists have become more popular or famous after their deaths, but it bugs me to some extent. I am grateful that this CD is released for fans of Cash to obtain and for newer fans to gain more appreciation of one of the worlds finest singer-songwriters. I just don’t like ‘dead’ people releasing records. It is well worth the listen so pick it up when you get the chance.

Rise Against
The Sufferer & The Witness (Parental Advisory)
2006 Geffen

Grade: A

http://www.riseagainst.com

Rise Against is no doubt one of my favorite bands, and they have just put out another outstanding release with The Sufferer & The Witness. If you learned about the band with their last release, Siren Song of the Counter-Culture, you will not be disappointed with this latest effort. They don’t miss a stride when it comes to matching the fast rock intensity and melody that they have been gaining notice for over the past few years.

Sonic Youth
Rather Ripped
2006 Geffen

Grade: A

Tired of your local ‘Alternative’ station not playing bands like Sonic Youth? Well all of that could change with this new release. This disc is packed full of radio ready tracks for the ‘know-it-all’ program directors to grab a hold of. I doubt they will. It’s ok to say they like Sonic Youth, but are they able to listen to them? Again this giant of the underground will probably be overlooked for more appealing bands like Staind or Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Isn’t that a shame?

 The Colonels Corner
I am proud to welcome back Col. Lump!

A Lot Like You Were
A Treatise On the New Neil
By Col. Lump

Is “good protest song” an oxymoron? This is a question visited by my fellow flakey musician friends when discussing the qualities of grizzled old fossil Neil Young’s new anti-war release After The Garden.

I must confess that I haven’t actually heard After The Garden. I am a part-time Neil Young fan, I listen to Tonight’s The Night , Zuma, and Ragged Glory on a consistent time schedule. Certain selections of his work with Buffalo Springfield like “Mr. Soul” are unappreciated 3-minute masterpieces.

The reasons I like Neil Young are that he continues to change his music in a Sisyphusian quest to evolve, and at his best he is brutally honest. There is no one quintessential Neil Young album.

Honesty is the most important factor to consider when debating the merits of a protest song. What is it about the issue that has the artist pissed off? Is the issue unpopular not only to the artist’s audience, but also among a majority segment of the public? Is the artist speaking from personal experience?

The late 60’s peace and screw generation is revered for their vocal opposition to the Vietnam War. Some old hippy farts have even argued that their music single-handedly stopped the war. What is almost never mentioned in these discussions is the fact that by the time so called protest anthems like “I’d Love To Change The World” and Young’s own “Ohio” were released, the Vietnam War was on the wane and the “Hippy Movement” was deeply engrained into the popular conscious. These songs were commercially successful and resulted in a financial windfall that ushered in the “Arena Rock” era when the former political activist pop stars could snort coke off strippers through $100 bills right next to The Man.

Fast forward to 2006. Modern rock albums like Green Day’s American Idiot have placed the Bush Administration and the Iraq War in an unfavorable light. But the message fell on the deaf ears of greasy faced pre-pubescent girls who just wanted to marry Billy Joe Armstrong.

Teen idol status was never Grandpa Neil’s forte. Poor guy resembles that life-sized Neanderthal Man poster hanging in Ms. Miller’s 6th grade biology classroom. The airwaves are not filled with modern popular music bequeathing unpopular politics. It’s still a better investment to write a song about your girlfriend’s fine ass.

So why would Neil Young write a new bunch of protest songs?

Simply because that’s what is on his mind right now. All those talking head pundits on both sides of the issue are going to be sorely disappointed a couple of months from now when Young rolls out some new numbers on a totally different subject like the advantages of flossing versus waterpics.

Still, the original question presented remains unanswered. Is there such a thing as a good protest song?

Yes. And the man and his music will be subject of my next overblown, windy manifesto. His name is James McMurtry.

Col. Lump is a lazy fart knocker. When able, he plays drums for the sometimes political, always noisy Richard’s Nixon. Alas, they spent all their website money on beer and bass strings.

 7 Questions With
The Great Kat Interview for The Audio Nut

Q. How did you come up with the idea to transpose classical onto guitar and invent your own style of guitar playing?

A. The Great Kat is a Juilliard Grad Violin Virtuoso/Winner of The Artists International Competition/Violin Soloist at Carnegie Recital Hall/ “Top 10 Fastest Shredders Of All Time” (Guitar One Magazine). After graduating from Juilliard, where I mastered violin virtuosity with Paganini Caprices, Sarasate, Vivaldi, Bach and other great composers, I decided that CLASSICAL MUSIC WAS DYING and DESPARATELY NEEDED to be RESURRECTED for the MASSES!!!!!

After discovering Heavy Metal and the electric guitar, I decided to take my violin technique on Paganini, Sarasate, Bazzini, Vivaldi and other geniuses and TRANSCRIBE THESE AUTHENTIC SCORES (note for note) and THEREFORE UPDATING Classical Music with Shred Guitar, Violin, Band AND Symphony Orchestra!!!

The Great Kat is ACTUALLY TAKING THESE AUTHENTIC SCORES (NOT just the MELODY) and EDITING, ARRANGING and ORCHESTRATING Classical Masterpieces for the MASSES to KEEP CLASSICAL ALIVE WHILE ENERGIZING and GENIUSIZING YOUR FLACCID BRAINS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Q. I've come across a couple other guitarists who claim to play GUITAR SHRED, but it comes nowhere close to what you are capable of doing with the guitar. What do you think of others who are attempting to imitate your style?
