The origins of the Robin Hood legend makes for the big section of this movie and only gets along to resolving how the movie started – the conquest of England by France in the 14th century – towards the end! It’s two stories in one, and neither works. I had higher expectations. It is not a Gladiator-like triumph in spite of the scale, although there are major lulls spent pontificating and talking, and Russell Crowe doesn’t even shine like he did in that Roman sandal epic. He’s more nimble as a protégée or learner about his mantle rather than a beefcake hero who’s less at home with a bow and arrow. It should get Oscar nominations, though, for technical craft, and the battle scenes are sometimes brilliant. Robin Hood is a good story, too, and if I can blow that trumpet I will do it here – who would you sooner have ruling: an evil king or a good one? We know the answer to that but Robin Hood doesn’t deliver.
