The Expendables DVD Review

“The shooting, fire play and blood letting is intermittently graphic, kind-of-like straight down your eye, yet spiritually operatic when it’s all done to save life.”

expendablesThe Expendables lives up to its namesake. Sylvester Stallone (Rambo) brings together hard men action staple hires from today’s Jason Statham (Transporter) and martial arts expert Jet Li to 1980s show stars Dolph Lundgren (who starred with Stallone in Rocky IV), Eric Roberts (Platoon) and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) for what’s a muddled telling of overcoming a ruthless, cowardly dictator in a beautifully filmed exotic country and what goes wrong.

Something’s wrong in paradise in spite of the good looking vistas and the boys fly in with a bomber that’s been treated with good care, which is what you can’t say about the boys. They are macho, tattoo-pierced, disillusioned, resignated and tender, a squad with A-Team-like assignments on the path of extreme resistance.

There’s plenty of good guy male bonding and wisecracking, which is amusing, and that is more plausible than The A-Team’s rapport, but there is very little time for character development apart from the basics. Jet Li gets the funniest line and the deepest resonance as a character while Mickey Rourke as a disillusioned soldier saddles in behind.

For such a hardy band, the direction of the story takes the path of minimal strain for quite a while until there’s heaps of grim and gritty action, which is sometimes impressively mounted by director Stallone, whose aplomb with action is just about as muddy as the writing, though – it comes around to not mattering who does what to whom except whose side your on. The shooting, fire play and blood letting is intermittently graphic, kind-of-like straight down your eye, yet spiritually operatic when it’s all done to save life. You get to enjoy humane, kind moments – particularly those regarding the opposite sex – before the mayhem really gets going.
