After writing his first book, “Crazy, With the Papers to Prove It,” Dan Couglin — sportswriter, television personality and now author of stories about odd characters — heard many comments about it.
“You should have written a chapter on Harry Leitch.”
“Why didn’t you include your own cousin, Tommy Coughlin?”
Dave Plagman, whom Coughlin calls a “football tout and gambler,” pleaded his own case for inclusion.
“I stole a train,” he told Coughlin. “How many of your ‘characters’ can say that?”
So, Coughlin wrote a second collection of stories, “Pass the Nuts.” The above “nuts” are all in it.
MAKES APPEARANCE
Coughlin will talk about the personalities he profiles in that book, as well as sign copies of the volume, when he appears at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Tuscarawas County Public Library.
“Coughlin’s first book sold well when it was published a year ago, but obviously it was incomplete,” said Debra Cahill, adult programming coordinator at the library, in information sent out by the library. “Coughlin’s response was to write ‘Pass the Nuts,’ a second volume of stories compiled over his 45 years as a sportswriter and sports announcer in Cleveland.”
Coughlin wrote for The Plain Dealer from 1964 to 1982. He appeared on WJW (Channel
television from 1983 to 2009.
ABOUT THE BOOKS
“You can’t make this stuff up,” says Coughlin about the characters in his book.
Many of the people he writes about will be unfamiliar to readers, notes Cahill in the library information.
“This is probably a good thing,” Coughlin claims. “It’s a lot better to read about these guys than to actually know them.”
Both “Crazy, With the Papers to Prove It” and “Pass the Nuts” will for sale at the signing for $13. Tuscarawas County Public Library is at 121 Fair Ave. NW in New Philadelphia. To register for the free program, call the library at 330-364-4474, ext 101.
