Using her music to share her story and connect with others – The San Diego Union

There was a different dream that Kathryn Cloward realized she had for her life — a dream that led her back to her childhood and her love for singing and writing songs. After spending years in sales and starting her own business, some significant life changes led her down a new path in music.

“My dream, the vision for my life I’ve had from my earliest memories, was to write songs and share them with others. While I tried a few times in my early 20s to do that, I never gave it my all. I didn’t believe in myself enough then,” she says. “Then, one day, I had enough of feeling that way. I didn’t want my entire life to pass me by without giving it my all to try to do what I always dreamed of doing and experiencing.”

Five years ago, she found her way to working with producers and musicians, taking voice and guitar lessons, writing songs, recording two albums and performing live. With the recent release of her two latest albums, Cloward is performing at 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Belly Up in Solana Beach, in a benefit for Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego. She’s worked with their auxiliary, including writing the theme song for their annual event to support children with cancer.

Cloward, 43, has a 10-year-old son and also writes the Kathryn the Grape series of books and music with messages of affirmation for her readers. She took some time to talk about her journey back to music and her live show tonight.
