Crackle GM Eric Berger Tapped for Expanded Digital Role at Sony …

Eric Berger, who has run Sony Pictures Television NetworksCrackle for the past six years, is expanding his duties with the additional post of chief digital officer of SPT Networks.

As EVP and chief digital officer for Sony Pictures Television Networks, Berger will have broader responsibilities for the division’s digital networks. He will remain general manager for Crackle, SPT Networks’ free, ad-supported streaming network available in the U.S. and Canada. Berger continues to report to Andy Kaplan, Sony Pictures Television Networks president of worldwide networks.

“Eric has done a great job overseeing Crackle’s channel operations, platform partnerships, ad sales initiatives and Crackle’s slate of originals,” Kaplan wrote in a staff memo announcing his promotion. “Eric will play a crucial role in leading these businesses and helping us craft a successful digital strategy to move our SPT Networks business forward in the years ahead.”

In announcing Berger’s expanded role, Kaplan highlighted Crackle’s upcoming original drama series “The Oath,” executive produced by Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and his G-Unit Film Television.

During his 11-year tenure at Sony, Berger has helped expand SPT Networks’ 100-plus linear international channels with a mix of models and formats, including ad-supported ad-supported VOD, subscription VOD, TV Everywhere, games, and virtual reality.

Berger has overseen Crackle as GM since November 2008, managing day-to-day operations of the digital networks group. He joined Sony Pictures Television in 2006 as VP of mobile entertainment, overseeing SPT’s mobile games division and launching video services with wireless carriers.

Prior to Sony, Berger was Time Warner’s VP of strategic planning, responsible for wireless initiatives and the creation of new digital businesses.
