The 3 Best Movies to See This February

Amant Double

The pouty young French actor Marine Vacth convincingly portrays a fragile young Parisienne who gets caught up in a mind-bending puzzle involving the problematic identities of two psychotherapists in Amant Double (“Double Lover”), the latest from French director Franc?ois Ozon. Based on a tricksy horror novel by Joyce Carol Oates, this film leaves a lingering chill of creepy disquiet in its wake.

Nostalgia

Director Mark Pellington (Arlington Road) ventures into allusive, atmospheric Terrence Malick territory with Nostalgia, a lushly shot, ruminative drama in which a fine ensemble (including John Ortiz, Jon Hamm, Catherine Keener, Bruce Dern, and Ellen Burstyn) explores how the personal effects of departed loved ones illuminate the meaning of their lives and our memories of them.

Permission

Permission, a dramedy about unmarried Brooklynites, stands out thanks to a strong script and an excellent cast. Anna (Rebecca Hall) wants an open relationship with Will (Dan Stevens); her brother, Hale (David Joseph Craig), wants to adopt, but his partner, Reese (Morgan Spector), isn’t so sure. Happiness, for all, is tantalizingly visible but frustratingly hard to reach.
