International curling competition begins in Falmouth

Elite curlers will converge on Falmouth for the start of the 17-day 49th annual SummerSpiel, the largest and oldest continuing offseason curling event in the world. Athletes from Cape Cod and across the country will take on their international counterparts at the Cape Cod Curling Club. Olympic – including Ann Swisshelm (2002 and 2014) and Becca Hamilton (2018) – and Paralympic curlers – including 2018 athletes – as well as local teen Anna Cenzali, a silver medalist in this year’s Under-18 national competition, will compete, too. Experts will be on hand to explain the game.

When: Action 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.; this weekend’s contests are mixed teams (two women and two men). Upcoming bonspiels: Sunday through Wednesday, women’s; Wednesday through July 22, men’s; July 22-25, junior’s; July 25-29, international wheelchair.

Cemetery tour highlights West Dennis history

Local historian Terri Fox will lead a stroll through Cape Cod history at the West Dennis cemetery, highlighting some prominent 19th- and 20th-century citizens. Among them: keeper of the light Warren Crowell Jr., blacksmith Browning Kelley Baker, and the seafaring Fisk brothers, who opened Trotting Park Racetrack in the late 1880s.

Tours recall great fire on Nantucket

Interpreters from the Nantucket Historical Association will give a series of 20-minute presentations of a new historic tour to commemorate the anniversary of “The Great Fire” on Nantucket 172 years ago. In 1846, The Great Fire destroyed most of the downtown area between Main Street and Broad Street. The tour will follow the route of the fire in the Nantucket Hotel’s 1945 Pumper.
