More entertainment ideas for the weekend

A few more entertainment options this weekend:

1. Best-selling author Marie Benedict will hold a launch party for her new book Thursday night at Penguin Bookshop in Sewickley.

Benedict’s new release, “The Only Woman in the Room,” is a novel based on the life of 1930s-’40s film star Hedy Lamarr.

To reserve an autographed copy, call 412-741-3838.

Benedict, a lawyer for 10 years at two top New York law firms, began writing books that unearthed the hidden historical stories of women. The first one, “The Other Einstein,” tells the tale of Albert Einstein’s first wife, a physicist herself, and the role she might have played in his theories. Benedict’s following novel was “Carnegie’s Maid.”

Her book launch takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. at the bookstore, at 417 Beaver St. in downtown Sewickley.

2. Looking for something sweet? Check out the “Eye Candy” exhibit opening Saturday at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh.

Phipps’ new orchid and bonsai show invites visitors to savor candy-inspired natural beauty. The conservatory has been transformed with candy-striped orchids, orchids planted in the shape of oversized lollipops, confectionery-scented varieties and more, with more than 1,000 pretty blooms. Visitors also can immerse themselves in the delectable detail of tropical bonsai trees, meticulously trained for years and now showcased in the exhibit.
