‘Bird Box’ book finally makes best-seller list thanks to Netflix film

Sandra Bullock stars in a horror thriller directed by Academy Award winner Susanne Bier.

They’ve seen the movie, and now they’re reading the original “Bird Box” book.

The 2014 novel by Ferndale author/musician Josh Malerman has landed for the first time on the New York Times best-seller list, thanks to the overwhelming success of the Sandra Bullock-starring horror movie from Netflix.

It ranks fourth for combined print and e-book fiction — and it’s on the rise. Last week, it debuted at seventh place.

The novel also bumped former First Lady Michelle Obama’s memoir “Becoming” from the top of the Apple books list. As of Thursday, “Bird Box” was at No. 1, with “Becoming” in second place.

For a book that debuted modestly five years ago, it’s the publishing world equivalent of going viral (just like “Bird Box” memes and jokes have).

Ecco, a division of HarperCollins, is doing numerous additional printings of the book that will have wide distribution.

“We’re thrilled to see a great book getting into the hands of so many readers!,” said Ecco associate publisher Miriam Parker via email. “It’s always a joy when a book finds a new audience”

“Bird Box” received good reviews when it initially came out. Malerman’s spare, powerful writing style and pacing drew comparisons to the stylish chills of director Alfred Hitchcock.
