Newburgh school district earns music recognition – News – recordonline.com – Middletown, NY – Times Herald

CITY OF NEWBURGH — The Newburgh school district has been recognized as one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation for the second year in a row, according to a news release from the district issued Tuesday.

The award is given to the top 5 percent of school districts in the U.S., making Newburgh one of 623 districts to receive recognition, according to the release.

The designation is given to schools and districts that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music instruction and value music as part of a well-rounded education.

Newburgh has one of the state’s longest-running string instructional programs and is growing its drum line program, according to the release.

To qualify for the award, the Newburgh school district answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities and support for music programs. The responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by the Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas, according to the release.
