Anne del Castillo Named NYC Media and Entertainment Commissioner, Replacing Julie Menin

The role comes with a focus on promoting diversity in the city’s media and entertainment workforce.

New York City’s bustling media and entertainment economy has a new boss.

Mayor Bill de Blasio is officially appointing film production and public media veteran Anne del Castillo to commissioner of the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME), replacing Julie Menin, who departed the post in January. Del Castillo has served as acting commissioner since February.

A New York City native, del Castillo was named general counsel and COO of MOME in 2015, leading several workforce and diversity initiatives in the media and entertainment sphere including the Made in NY Women’s Film, TV and Theatre Fund for female filmmakers and playwrights. Del Castillo comes from a long-running background in the film industry: She has served as vice president of development and business affairs at American Documentary, producer of the PBS doc series POV and associate director of the Austin Film Society.

As commissioner, she’ll continue to promote a diverse workforce in the city’s media and entertainment industries in addition to working to strengthen those economies as a whole. She’ll also oversee the work of the recently-formed Office of Nightlife and its senior executive director Ariel Palitz.

“Media and entertainment are central to New York City’s economy and identity,” said de Blasio in a release. “Anne has the vision and experience to continue to strengthen the industry during this time of unprecedented growth and change. Her commitment to diversifying our entertainment sector and piloting innovative programs will ensure New York continues to be the media capital of the world.”

In her new role, del Castillo will additionally spearhead an effort to capitalize on the emerging augmented reality and virtual reality industries, and lead outreach into the advertising sphere to help find career pathways for New Yorkers.

“I am honored to accept the Mayor’s appointment, and grateful for the opportunity to continue
