USDA: South Dakota leads nation in unplanted acres

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture says South Dakota farmers were unable to plant more than 3.8 million acres this year, the highest number in the nation.

KSFY-TV reports the tally includes 2.8 million unplanted corn acres and nearly 851,000 acres for soybeans.

The USDA says total number of unplanted acres nationwide was more than 19 million acres, and the is the highest since the agency began reporting those figures in 2007

Many states across the Midwest were hit hard by flooding this spring, leading to fields being too wet for farmers to plant.

Board debates raising bond requirements for drillers

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A state board is weighing whether to raise bonding requirements for natural gas and oil drillers.

The Rapid City Journal reports the Board of Minerals and Environment is considering the increase as the state pursues a $15.5 million lawsuit against a Texas-based company for abandoning gas wells in western South Dakota.

Spyglass Cedar Creek drilled 40 natural gas wells near Buffalo then abandoned them after natural gas prices plummeted.

Board members called the Spyglass saga a “perfect storm.”

Department of Environment and Natural Resources Minerals and Mining program administrator Mike Lees says the state has not had similar issues with other oil and gas developers in the state.

SURPRISE TRIPLETS

Woman thought she had kidney stones, gave birth to triplets

STURGIS, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota woman who recently gave birth to triplets says she didn’t find out about her pregnancy until she went to the hospital with what she thought were kidney stones.

KOTA-TV reports Dannette Giltz, of Sturgis, gave birth to the healthy triplets on Aug. 10.

Giltz says that despite having two other children, she did not know she was 34 weeks pregnant.
