Veterans Day is a time to honor those who’ve served. To mark the occasion, we’ve rounded up a list of some of the most notable movies on Netflix and Hulu about the U.S. military and veterans. From gripping dramas about World War II to sobering documentaries about how service members adjust to life after combat, these films will remind you of why we honor service members on Veterans Day.

‘Black Hawk Down’

Josh Hartnett stars in this 2001 Oscar-winning movie from Ridley Scott. It’s based on the 1993 Battle of Mogadishu, an ill-fated military raid went horribly wrong, leading to the death of 18 U.S. soldiers and many more Somalis. Streaming on Netflix.

‘Inglorious Basterds’

Quentin Tarantino rewrites the traditional World War II movie script in this Academy Award-winning film from 2009. Brad Pitt plays a U.S. army officer who leads a team of Jewish soldiers who hunt down Nazis. Meanwhile, Shosanna, a Jewish theater owner, plots to assassinate Hitler when he attends a premiere at her cinema. Streaming on Netflix.

‘Let There Be Light’

This 1946 documentary directed by John Huston (The Maltese Falcon, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre) is the fourth in a series of movies he made to support U.S. efforts in World War II. Let There Be Light focuses on returning veterans suffering what we now know as post-traumatic stress disorder. But the military didn’t want the public to see this side of the war, and the film was suppressed until the 1980s. Streaming on Netflix.

‘Megan Leavey’

A marine corporal named Megan Leavey (Kate Mara) is paired with an aggressive military combat dog named Rex. The pair form a tight bond and go on to save numerous lives while deployed in Iraq, as depicted in this based-on-true-story film. Streaming on Hulu.
