Music school to perform Piotrowski

Concord Community Music School will present a free concert featuring the works of New Hampshire-based composer Kenneth Piotrowski on Dec. 7 at 1 p.m. in the school’s recital hall.

Piotrowski said he’s written more than 500 compositions and had some 100 of them published. For this concert, the ensemble will performing two of his string quartets, two piano trios and a trio for two violins and piano.

Piotrowski will not be performing himself, but he will be in attendance.

“I’ve know one of the teachers at the school for a very long time,” he said. “In fact, we used to perform together as part of a piano trio.”

The concert was arranged by Bozena O’Brien, music school faculty, who previously performed with Piotrowski in the Brinkler Trio (along with cellist Gary Hodges).

O’Brien will perform on violin. Joining her will be Margaret Hopkins, violin; Shireen Meskoob, violin; Matthew Dickey, viola; Katherine Jensik, cello; Kari Jukka-Pekka Vainio, cello; and Abigail Charbeneau, piano.

O’Brien said she wanted to feature Piotrowski’s work because it’s accessible to listeners, classical but also folksy and fiddly.

“I think it’s going to be a lovely time,” O’Brien said.

She also likes to perform from contemporary composers and hopes the concert might inspire new composers to ask ensembles to play their music.

“When it’s well done, you actually forget that it is your music, and it could be very enjoyable, but at the same time, you don’t want the limelight, at least I don’t,” he said.

The concert is about an hour long, and it is free and open to the public.
