Three very different holiday gift-giving books for under $20

If your gift exchange group has a $20 limit, and there are readers on the list, here are three very different books that fit the budget.

“Becoming: A Guided Journal for Discovering Your Voice” by Michelle Obama (Penguin Random House, $19.99)

Michelle Obama’s  “Becoming” is the best-selling memoir of all time. Now she offers a way for others to explore their thoughts and feelings in her new book, “Becoming: A Guided Journal for Discovering Your Voice.”

Emphasizing the benefits of journaling, the former First Lady admits she journaled briefly and then got busy with other things and she wishes she had been more diligent.

“You don’t have to write in poetry or wait for some lightning-bolt epiphany,” she writes. “You don’t have to journal every day, and you certainly don’t have to feel like you have anything important to say … Just remember that everything matters — the sounds and the smells, the laughs and the pain — because in the end, it’s all a part of your story. I hope you’ll use this journal to write down your experiences, thoughts, and feelings, in all their imperfections, and without judgment.”

In this small hardcover, Obama gives prompts for journaling, with space for writing thoughts. For instance, she suggests making a playlist of 10 songs you could listen to on repeat. Two blank pages give the journal writer room to answer the questions, “What kind of childhood did your parents or grandparents have? How was it different from and similar to your own?” Another question she poses: “What was the last great book you read? What did you learn from it?”
