Why Maine Bookstore Hello Hello Books Won’t Be Stocking Bestseller ‘A Very Stable Genius’

Lacy Simons, owner and founder of Rockland, Maine independent bookstore hello hello books, recently announced in an Instagram video that the store would not be stocking New York Times bestseller A Very Stable Genius: Donald J. Trump’s Testing of America (Penguin Press, 2020) by Pulitzer Prize winners Philip Rucker and Carol Leonnig within the store’s 850 square feet. The video’s caption noted that the store “is happy to special order it” for customers.

The store, which opened in August 2011, stocks anywhere from 2,000-5,000 titles depending on the time of year, including new and used books. In an interview, Simons said the two major reasons she chose not to stock the book had to do with the glut of books about Trump and the lack of sales potential. On the first point, Simons said, “No matter the credentials of the journalist(s) or former White House staffers who write them, ‘insider’ books on Donald Trump are a dime a dozen and seem, to me, largely unnecessary. Why are we spending so much time and so many resources talking about and writing about the various ways that he is deranged, misogynist, a tyrant, racist, unfit for office, xenophobic? We are three years into this travesty of an administration and nobody who’s going to read these books
