An alternate March bracket, the Sweet 16 of Southern California movies

We asked our staff about the quintessential Southern California movies and got dozens of responses. So it was up to the brain trust of the editors of the Southern California News Group Entertainment Squad to narrow these great ideas into the Sweet 16 of Southern California movies of the past 50 years.

We had some rules, like only one Quentin Tarantino film could make the list, so his love letter to LA got the spot. We agonized over which F. Gary Gray entry to include and opted for the one that not only showed off Southern California, but told the story of one of its biggest artists — and it also landed an Oscar nod.  And we had some battles — don’t even get us started on essential Southern California high school comedies (“Clueless,” “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” “Valley Girl” and “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” were all strong showings, but “Clueless” accurately depicts the insanity of a first time freeway driver).

Clearly this is not comprehensive, but since we have no brackets busted from March Madness, here’s a little bit of entertainment happiness for you.

Take the survey below to vote for the movies that should move on to the Elite Eight, which will be announced on March 30.

Don’t worry, we aren’t collecting your data for anything other than this game, and we aren’t adding you to a mailing list or selling your information to other companies. Only one ballot per computer or device.

Make sure to tell your friends and maybe organize some virtual prizes for yourselves. The top choices will move onto the Final Four on April 2, with the championship round being held on April 6.
