Town House Motor Lodge becomes latest motel demolished by Jacobs Entertainment

The Town House Motor Lodge is at the corner of Second Street and Arlington Avenue.

The Town House Motor Lodge was in “complete disrepair” before it was demolished last week, according to the building owner, Jacobs Entertainment.

Still, some affordable housing advocates are bemoaning the loss of yet another option for last-resort affordable housing.

“We’re in a housing shortage, and he’s not gone vertical on one property,” said Reno City Councilwoman Jenny Brekhus of Jacobs Entertainment CEO Jeff Jacobs. “He’s got gaming properties, he’s reinvesting in those. What else he’s got is a whole lot of vacant land. Results speak for themselves.”

Brekhus estimates that, through the razing of multiple motels in the area, Jacobs Entertainment has eliminated about 1,400 units and 24 acres of affordable housing.

The Town House Motor Lodge, located at 303 W. Second St, was a two-story brick building built in 1956. It had 79 units, according to county records, and had been vacant since Thanksgiving, according to city officials.

Colorado-based Jacobs Entertainment acquired the property in March 2020, after it foreclosed. The developer initially had not planned on demolishing the Town House, but inspections revealed a renovation of the building was hopeless, according to Jacobs Entertainment representatives.

Tenants were living among mice, cockroaches and bed bugs, while being charged $1,500 a month in rent, according to a statement sent to the Reno Gazette Journal on Thursday. Many units also had no flooring or hot water, and the ceilings were caving in.

Jacobs representatives said that their regional housing manager helped residents relocate by ensuring they found affordable housing, the statement said.
