Western Mass News stations in Springfield sold to Atlanta-based television chain

SPRINGFIELD — The three WGGB television stations — ABC40, CBS3 and Fox6 — collectively marketed as Western Mass News were sold Monday as part of a $2.7 billion deal involving all 17 Meredith Corp. stations nationwide.

The purchase includes: WGGB (ABC and FOX) / WSHM-LD (CBS), Springfield; WFSB (CBS), Hartford-New Haven, Connecticut; WGCL (CBS) / WPCH (independent), Atlanta, Georgia; KPHO (CBS) / KTVK (independent), Phoenix, Arizona ; KPTV (FOX) / KPDX (MyNetwork), Portland, Oregon; KMOV (CBS), St. Louis, Missouri; WSMV (NBC), Nashville, Tennessee; KCTV (CBS) / KSMO (MyNetwork), Kansas City, Missouri; WHNS (FOX), Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina; KVVU (FOX), Las Vegas, Nevada; WALA (FOX), Mobile, Alabama: and WNEM (CBS), Flint-Saginaw, Michigan.

Gray currently operates in only one of these television markets: Flint-Saginaw. Gray said it will divest of its ABC affiliate in that market, WJRT-TV, to an independent third party.

The purchase will make Gray the nation’s second largest television broadcaster serving 113 local markets reaching approximately 36 percent of US television households.

The Meredith stations have a a combined net revenue exceeding $3.1 billion.

Meredith purchased WGGB from Gormally Broadcasting in 2014 for $53.8 million. Gormally had purchased the station seven years earlier for $21.2 million.

WGGB began as WHYN-TV, broadcasting on UHF channel 55, back in 1953.

It has changed ownership several times since its founding with previous owners including Guy Gannett Broadcasting Services and Sinclair Broadcasting.

Gray Television’s stock was up Monday by $2.37 to $22.69 a share.
