Britney Spears and Kevin Federline have differing viewpoints about his memoir.

After Spears, 43, claimed her ex-husband’s upcoming book, You Thought You Knew, is a cash grab, Federline, 47, begged to differ in an exclusive interview with Us Weekly on Wednesday, October 15.

“Money’s not the root of this thing,” he insisted. “I feel like, if she has the right to tell her story, why don’t I?”

Spears issued a fiery statement on Tuesday, October 14, after various publications began releasing excerpts from Federline’s tell-all, which hits stores next week.

“With news from Kevin’s book breaking, once again he and others are profiting off her, and sadly it comes after child support has ended with Kevin,” Spears’ rep told Us. “All she cares about are her kids, Sean Preston and Jayden James, and their well-being during this sensationalism. She detailed her journey in her memoir.”

In 2023, Spears released her own book, The Woman in Me, in which she candidly looked back on her music career, her high-profile relationships with Justin Timberlake and Federline as well as her 13-year conservatorship.

Now, Federline is sharing his side of the story in You Thought You Knew, which chronicles how he became a household name after marrying Spears in 2004. While looking back on their whirlwind romance, which ended in divorce in 2007, the former backup dancer claims the pop star called Timberlake, 44, the night before their wedding, mixed wine and prescription medication while pregnant and snorted cocaine when she was still breast-feeding their two sons, Preston, now 20, and Jayden, now 19, among other allegations.

When asked whether he was upset reading his ex’s bestselling memoir, Federline told Us on Wednesday, “I wouldn’t say upset. Everybody’s entitled to their point of view. Her perspective is what it is, and I have my perspective, and I feel that I’m entitled to that as well.”

Federline admitted he “couldn’t even remember the last conversation” he had with Spears, though he insisted he only wishes her the best.

“All I really want is for her to be able to have a wonderful relationship with her children,” he told Us. “I want her to be happy, healthy and all of the things. I want nothing but greatness for her.”

That said, Federline reveals in You Thought You Knew that he worries about Spears’ “survival” after a Los Angeles judge freed the “Toxic” singer from her conservatorship in 2021, giving her control of her personal, financial and medical decisions for the first time since her estranged father, Jamie Spears, became her guardian in 2008.

“The truth is, this situation with Britney feels like it’s racing toward something irreversible,” he writes. “It’s become impossible to pretend everything’s OK. From where I sit, the clock is ticking, and we’re getting close to the eleventh hour. Something bad is going to happen if things don’t change, and my biggest fear is that our sons will be left holding the pieces.”

Although they are no longer in touch, Federline said he would pick up the phone if Britney called him asking for help.

“All you gotta do is ask ’cause all I want is good things for everybody,” he told Us. “It’s been tough. It’s been hard. And, yes, all of this truth that I am saying in this [book], yes, it’s tough, but at the end of the day, I just want what’s best for everybody.”

You Thought You Knew is available on Tuesday, October 21, via Listenin, an audio-first publisher.
