Social media influencer Liv Schmidt — known as Skinni Societe — is under fire after revealing the trick she plays on who she considers to be overweight tourists visiting New York City.

“Being a girls girl is giving obese people the wrong directions so they walk more,” Schmidt, 23, told her followers in a since-deleted video shared via TikTok on Thursday, November 13, according to The Daily Mail.

The video sparked instant online backlash, with many turning to the NYCinfluencersnark Reddit to discuss the post and Schmidt’s intentions. “What the f**k is she even saying? Why is it so hard for influencers to use correct grammar…,” wrote one person.

Another contributed: “She’s such a loser I sort of feel bad for her. Imagine spending all your time thinking about being skinny. Too bad she’s spreading her disease to others.”

“I feel the same way, like can she even have a normal conversation with someone?” a third person agreed. “All she does is obsess over food and bodies. If I knew her irl I would keep my distance because she’s also harshly judging every single person she comes across. Like imagine being her coworker, yikes.”

Schmidt appeared unfazed by the online backlash, posting another video via Instagram on Friday, November 14, referencing her body size preference.

“Tis the season to get skinni BecauseI would rather cry Over getting my steps in then A Man,” the influencer captioned the video, which featured her walking down a street in New York at night.

Schmidt, who previously worked a corporate job in New York City before becoming a full-time influencer, is no stranger to controversy. She is often accused by her detractors of rage-baiting, i.e. posting content for the sole purpose of making people angry or uncomfortable. Others have expressed concern that her content, which is focused on the methods she uses to stay thin, reinforces or supports disordered eating.

In a September 2024 interview with The Wall Street Journal, she insisted that her content is “what the viewers want.”

“A lot of people want to know what people eat,” she told the outlet at the time. “I’m honest about how it is hard work. We all have the option to follow and block any content we want.”

Schmidt’s account was later banned “as a result of community guideline violations.” She subsequently started a new account with a bio that at one time read, “It’s not a sin to want to be thin. Saving America from obesity 1 person @ a time,” the Journal reported.

Schmidt continued to defend her content and online presence in an interview with Cosmopolitan the following month.

“I eat to fuel my body, not my emotions,” Schmidt explained of her mentality. “That’s a skinny girl mindset.”

Schmidt also challenged some of the backlash her content has received.

“People are body positive until you’re skinnier than them, or you’re leaner than them. A lot of people who judge me have been through eating disorders,” she insisted. “Since I’ve never had one, I can’t relate.”
