Carey Mulligan and Marcus Mumford couldn’t be a more perfect match.
Us Weekly confirmed in April 2012 that the couple tied the knot in the English countryside, just over one year after their budding relationship made headlines. They were first linked in early 2011 when they were caught looking cozy together at two different concerts — but their love story reportedly began much earlier than that.
While the pair haven’t addressed the widely spread tale, legend has it the “Little Lion Man” crooner and Maestro actress met when they attended the same Christian church camp as kids and stayed in touch as pen pals before reconnecting as adults.
“To have a love letter from someone, to hold it in your hand and know that you can keep it for your whole life … well, that’s an amazing thing,” Mulligan told The Telegraph in 2013, gushing over the “lost art form” of the handwritten love letter.
Though they’ve made many public appearances together, the British couple prefers to keep their private life out of the spotlight. “Marcus is the only thing that’s mine that I can keep totally away, so I try to,” Mulligan told Vogue in April 2015, five months before welcoming daughter Evelyn. (The duo also share son Wilfred, who arrived in August 2017.)

While locked down at home amid the coronavirus pandemic, Mumford gave a virtual performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon — but it didn’t go exactly as planned. “Hi Jimmy, my kids are screaming and my dog is barking and my wife is directing,” the singer joked in a blooper reel shared via Instagram, with Mulligan giggling in the background.

During her Saturday Night Live hosting debut, Mulligan joked that spending “the last year quarantining in the English countryside with my husband and two small children” seemed like “the beginning of most horror movies.”
Mumford proceeded to crash her opening monologue. “It’s me, Marcus Mumford, from the band Mumford & Sons,” he said while waving excitedly from the studio audience. “I left [the kids] with the Sons. … Do you know if they booked a musical guest for tonight?” Later on, Mumford whipped out his acoustic guitar as Mulligan begged for him to stop singing.

Mulligan and Mumford welcomed their third baby earlier in the year, she confirmed in a Vogue interview that was conducted when she was six weeks postpartum. “Here I am, ready for Vogue,” she joked to the magazine’s writer, pointing out a diaper-related stain on her shirt while holding her infant. “I’m going to change you, and then we’re going to find Mum another shirt.”

Though Mulligan didn’t take home the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Maestro at the 2024 Oscars, Mumford still managed to make the night memorable. The musician shared a sweet TikTok of himself carrying Mulligan around backstage at the awards show. Proving that he’s the Ken to Mulligan’s Barbie, Mumford used an acoustic version of Ryan Gosling’s “I’m Just Ken” from the Barbie movie as the post’s sound.
Mumford joined his wife on the Oscars red carpet earlier that night an complemented her black and white Balenciaga gown by sporting an all-black suit and knee-length coat. He accessorized his look with a pair of tinted glasses.
