The Bringing Up Bates family has long followed a courtship process before marriage.

Gil and Kelly Jo Bates are parents of 19 children: Zach, Michaela, Erin, Lawson, Nathan, Alyssa, Tori, Trace, Carlin, Josie, Katie, Jackson, Warden, Isaiah, Addallee, Ellie, Callie, Jud and Jeb.

Gil and Kelly Jo’s expansive brood soon became the subjects of 2012’s United Bates of America. Three years later, the Bates family returned to TV on UpTV’s Bringing Up Bates, which ran for 10 seasons before its 2022 cancellation.

As chronicled on their family’s shows, Gil and Kelly Jo’s eldest children courted their eventual spouses instead of following modern-day dating practices.

A Comprehensive Guide to the ‘Bringing Up Bates’ Family: Children and More

“Courtship is basically getting to know someone with the intent of marriage,” Michaela said on a July 2015 episode of Bringing Up Bates. “It’s taking out the step of dating around for fun that can get you into trouble.”

The Bates’ courtships came with rules, including no kissing and bringing chaperones on dates to avoid physical temptation.
