Jamie Lynn Spears’ daughter Maddie is recalling how her life changed following a near-fatal ATV crash in 2017.
“I feel like our faith got a lot stronger,” Maddie, 17, who doesn’t remember the accident, told People in an interview published on Wednesday, June 17. “It definitely put things into perspective.”
Spears, 35, explained that the family was watching Maddie, but they “still don’t quite know if she was dodging a dog” or something else when she became trapped underwater in a pond on their property.
“She went in the water and me, my father-in-law and my husband [Jamie Watson] ran as fast as we could to go jump in to get her out, but she was stuck under the ATV,” Spears said.

Spears’ mom called 911 and the ambulance arrived a few minutes later, pulling Maddie out of the water. Spears recalled the moment being “really not a sight anybody wants to see.”
“At that point, she was not breathing. We thought that she had passed,” Spears said, noting that a firefighter said they “got a pulse.”
Maddie was then airlifted to a hospital, where she was in a coma for two days and a priest was called to administer her last rites.
“He comes in, and she physically sits up in all her restraints and tubes,” Spears said. “I’m screaming for the doctors, like ‘Come in here now!’ Even the priest was like, ‘I’ve never seen anything like what’s happening.’ I knew she was in there and felt all of us praying. We were given a miracle, and I don’t take it for granted.”

Spears noted that Maddie had been “begging me for a little sibling” before the accident — and mentioned her request while coming out of a coma.
“When she came out of her coma, she’s like, ‘You going to give me that baby?’” Spears recalled. “I was like, ‘Oh, He’s already calling in.’”
One year later, Spears welcomed her second child, daughter Ivey, with husband Watson. (Spears and Watson tied the knot in 2014. She previously welcomed Maddie in 2008 with ex fiancé Casey Aldridge.)
“We always say she just went up to heaven to go pick out her little sister,” Spears quipped.
Maddie, for her part, made a full recovery. Reflecting back, Maddie shared that “seeing everybody rally around me, it made me realize how blessed I am.” She added, “It really made me so grateful for every day.”
