Martha Stewart Issues New Statement Amid ‘Hungry’ Halloween Costume Drama

Martha Stewart has issued a second statement regarding her controversial 2026 Halloween costume after sparking instant backlash for depicting an unhoused person.

“It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up. My earlier statement didn’t go far enough. I know many people are suffering economically,” the lifestyle mogul, 85, wrote via Instagram just hours after speaking with Page Six on Sunday, November 1. “Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I am very sorry. Martha.”

Stewart had revealed her costume via social media earlier on Sunday in a since-deleted photo that showed her in tattered clothes and makeup that resembled dirt that had been smeared across her face. She also held a sign in the photo that read, “I AM HUNGRY. HELP ME.”

After attracting public backlash, alleging she had mocked individuals experiencing homelessness, she soon deleted the image and issued her first statement via the outlet.

“I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention,” the statement read. “[That] was never my intention.”

The statement continued, “Homelessness continues to remain one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises, something that I care deeply about and I have spent a significant amount of time and effort supporting charities that combat this ongoing social epidemic. [I am] committed to continuing to make a difference.”

Stewart’s second statement attracted support from her fans who took to the post’s comments section to share thoughts. “Martha, we still love you. Sometimes the joke comes out a little underbaked. We’ve all had our moments,” wrote one person, while another wrote, “Martha! You’re fine, it’s Halloween and it’s just a costume. Not everything is a political or social statement.”

Others, however, were still disapproving. “I want to know the annual salary of everyone who was OK [with] it,” wrote one person, while another wrote, “Love Martha but how did no one on her PR team tell her that wasn’t a good idea?”

The controversial outfit was not Stewart’s only Halloween costume this year. On Saturday, October 31, she shared photos from her appearance on the Today show one day prior. “I dressed in an Olympics-inspired costume and joined host Craig Melvin, who dressed up as my friend Snoop Dogg, also in Olympic red, white, and blue,” she captioned a carousel of images.

She continued at the time, “I always enjoy getting dressed up in fun and creative costumes when my busy schedule allows.”
