A Review by Ben Dover
If you’re looking for a movie that will make you laugh, cheer, and feel inspired, then do yourself a favor and avoid Ready to Rumble at all costs. This movie is a travesty that tries to cash in on the popularity of professional wrestling, but it only succeeds in making a mockery of it.
The movie stars David Arquette and Scott Caan as two idiotic sewage workers who worship a washed-up wrestler named Jimmy King, played by Oliver Platt. This is one of the movies biggest problems. Platt is not a wrestler and there are a lot of wrestlers who could have done way better. When King is cheated out of the title by Diamond Dallas Page and a crooked promoter, the two morons decide to help him get his belt and his dignity back. Along the way, they encounter a bunch of WCW wrestlers, a Nitro Girl, a cranky old trainer, and a lot of nonsense.
The movie is supposed to be a comedy, but it’s not that funny. The jokes are stale, the gags are vulgar, and the dialogue is dumb. The movie tries to poke fun at the wrestling industry, but they don’t understand the appeal or the culture of wrestling, they just insult it with cheap stereotypes and clichés. The movie also tries to be a buddy movie, but there’s no chemistry or charm between the leads. They’re just annoying and obnoxious.
The movie is also supposed to be an action movie, but there’s nothing exciting about it. The wrestling scenes are dull and fake, with no sense of drama or suspense. The movie relies on a lot of CGI and stunt doubles, but they’re poorly done and obvious. The movie also features some car chases and explosions, but they’re pointless and over-the-top. The movie has no style or flair, it’s just a mess of noise and chaos.
The movie is a waste of time and money, and a disgrace to the wrestling business. It’s a shame that so many talented wrestlers agreed to appear in this garbage, and that so many fans were fooled into watching it. It’s a movie that should have never been made, and should be forgotten as soon as possible. It’s a movie that makes me want to rumble, but not in a good way.
I may be too old for this movie but it seems that had it been WWE based it would have been a better movie with more stars to draw from. I would have much rather seen an old Hogan in the Platt role for instance so to give that benefit of the doubt I can see the appeal to a certain age range of WCW fan.
