Vanessa Hudgens and Austin Butler’s Quotes About Each Other Post-Split

By Michael Feb 7, 2024

Austin Butler and Vanessa Hudgens may have a little less conversation following their 2020 breakup, but the exes continue to pay tribute to their past together.

In September 2022 — two years after Us Weekly confirmed the pair had split — Hudgens called her nine-year-long relationship with Butler “life-changing.”

“The public only sees so much,” Hudgens told Nylon at the time, referring to her romances with Butler and Zac Efron. (Hudgens and Efron dated from 2006 to 2010.) “I’ve also been through two very long life-changing relationships, and no one really knows what happened except for me. When I write my memoir, it’ll be amazing.” (Hudgens moved on with baseball player Cole Tucker, whom she married in December 2023.)

Butler, who has been dating Kaia Gerber since December 2021, revealed in a January 2023 interview for The Hollywood Reporter that Hudgens inspired him to take on his Oscar-nominated role as Elvis Presley, though he only referred to her as his “friend.”

He later praised Hudgens for her help in getting him cast in 2022’s Elvis while clarifying her as the unnamed “friend” he mentioned.

“We’d been together for so long, and she had this sort of clairvoyant moment and so I really — I owe her a lot for believing in me,” the actor told the Los Angeles Times in January 2023.

A ‘Life-Changing’ Relationship
“I’ve … been through two very long life-changing relationships, and no one really knows what happened except for me,” Hudgens told Nylon about her time spent with Butler and Efron. “When I write my memoir, it’ll be amazing.”

‘Elvis’ Epiphany
Butler revealed that Hudgens inspired him to audition for the role of Presley in Luhrmann’s 2022 biopic, though he did not mention her by name.
“The month before I heard that Baz [Luhrmann] was making the movie, I was going to look at Christmas lights with a friend, and there was an Elvis Christmas song on the radio and I was singing along, and my friend looked over at me and goes, ‘You’ve got to play Elvis,’” he recalled to The Hollywood Reporter in January 2023, adding that Hudgens continued to push the casting idea after hearing him sing and play the piano.
“She said, ‘I’m serious. You gotta figure out how you can get the rights to a script,’” he shared. “Then my agent called and said, ‘So Baz Luhrmann is making an Elvis film.” (Hudgens, for her part, previously told the same story in an interview four years earlier.)

That Accent
Butler’s Elvis accent stayed with him long after the film wrapped — and after the release — prompting the internet to weigh in with all the jokes. Hudgens, for her part, couldn’t resist poking fun at her ex’s Memphis drawl. Commenting on an Instagram screenshot of a headline about Butler’s accent — “He went to the Lady Gaga school of Oscar campaign acting,” the Instagram user captioned the image — Hudgens replied, “Crying.”

Clarifying Comments
Butler said he “learned a lesson” after facing backlash for referring to Hudgens as an unnamed “friend” in his January 2023 THR interview. “I felt that I was respecting her privacy in a way and not wanting to bring up a ton of things that would cause her to have to talk,” he explained to Esquire in February 2024.
Noting that he has “so much love and care” for Hudgens, he continued, “It was in no way trying to erase anything.” Butler also added that he “didn’t want to give up anybody’s else’s privacy,” as he values his own “so much.”
