Lil Jon is not only an accomplished rapper, music producer and DJ, but also a home renovation aficionado.
The musician, 53, teams up with interior designer Anitra Mecadon to help people create the space of their dreams on HGTV’s Lil Jon Wants to Do What?, the second season of which wrapped up earlier this month. Now, the duo are sharing their best decoration tips and tricks exclusively with Us.
While Lil Jon’s design ideas on the show can be bold, such as transforming a basement into a swanky club and building a DJ station for a client’s child, Mecadon said sometimes it’s better to focus on simplicity.
“Do you want a giant pool table, a sofa made out of an old Cadillac or a 4-foot disco ball shimmering up your space?” she says in the latest issue of Us Weekly. “It all sounds great, but will it fit? You have to make your space work for you, and if it’s too big to fit in the door, it’s not making it in the room.”
Lil Jon, for his part, tells Us that the key to creating a “good vibe” is by following a space’s feng shui. “It’s a great place to start when you’re thinking about designing a room,” he shares.
Seasons 1 and 2 of HGTV’s Lil Jon Wants to Do What? are available to stream on Max. Keep scrolling for more of Lil Jon and Mecadon’s home renovation tips:

Lil Jon is all about picking shades that “make you feel good or create a vibe in a space,” he explains. “Avoid bright colors in your bedroom, too, because this is a place to feel calm, relaxing energy.”

When it comes to upgrading your entertaining space, Mecadon warns that bigger isn’t always better! Instead of filling a room with large furniture, focus on a single piece that will bring the wow factor and is something you and your guests will actually use.

Whether you’re torn between minimalism or cottagecore, Lil Jon tells Us you’ll want to nail down a single look you really love before getting carried away with design: “You don’t want your home to be a hodgepodge of different styles.”

Invite positive energy into your abode by implementing the ancient Chinese art of feng shui. Based on the concept that our homes reflect what’s happening inside us, the aim is to arrange objects in your space to achieve harmony and balance. (Think: a tidy, clutter-free entryway with decorative plants to incorporate vibrance from the living world.)

If you’re looking to make a statement without breaking the bank, Mecadon suggests checking out your local thrift stores, salvage yard or online marketplace. “You’ll be surprised by the treasures that are waiting for you,” she says, adding that the majority of her space “is made up of thrifted vintage showstoppers we paid a fraction of the cost for. They’re amazing conversation pieces and have made a few friends green with envy.”
