David and Victoria Beckham are one of Hollywood’s longest standing couples for good reason: they’ve been through the ringer together.
From raising four children — sons Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz, and daughter Harper — to infidelity allegations and divorce speculation, they’ve remained united through it all.
“People have been making things up about our relationship for 20 years,” Victoria told British Vogue for their October cover story in September 2018. “We both realize that we are stronger together than we are as individuals.”

The lovebirds first crossed paths in early 1997 while attending a charity football match at the Manchester United players’ lounge. The former Spice Girl described their meet-cute in a letter she wrote to herself for British Vogue in September 2016. “Love at first sight does exist,” she wrote. “It will happen to you in the Manchester United players’ lounge – although you will get a little drunk, so exact details are hazy. While the other football players stand at the bar drinking with their mates, you will see David standing aside with his family. (He’s not even in the first team at this stage – you are the famous one.) And he has such a cute smile. You, too, are close to your family, and you will think how similar he feels to you. He’s going to ask for your number. (He still has the London-to-Manchester plane ticket on which you wrote it.)”

The singer was all smiles one year later while announcing her engagement to the soccer star at a press conference. “It’s lovely, it’s a surprise, as well,” she said of her engagement ring.

The twosome had more exciting news to share in 1998: They were expecting their first child! However, Victoria’s bandmate Mel B revealed that Posh “had a really tough time” with her pregnancy during the group’s Spice World tour that year. “She was running off the stage to go vomit,’ Scary Spice said during an appearance on The Meredith Viera Show in September 2014.

Posh and Becks tied the knot just three months later on the 4th of July at Luttrellstown Castle near Dublin. The fashion designer walked down the aisle in a strapless Vera Wang gown with a 20-foot train and an 18K-gold tiara, while her husband and son wore all-white tuxes.

The Learning to Fly author and the athlete announced that they were expanding their family in February 2002. “This year has been such an exciting year for us — England are in the World Cup finals, Victoria’s had a second top 10 hit and now we are expecting a new baby,” they said in a joint statement at the time.

Six months later, a second son was born to the couple via C-Section: Romeo James Beckham. “He looks like Brooklyn,” proud dad David told reporters outside Portland Hospital in London. “He’s got Brooklyn’s nose and Victoria’s chin.”

The family began a new adventure when David was transferred from his Manchester United team to Real Madrid, with the group moving to Spain to be centrally located.

Infidelity speculation swirled after David was photographed leaving a Madrid nightclub with a mystery woman. Though she was later revealed to be his assistant, Rebecca Loos, Rebecca’s brother John Charles Loos later claimed that the cheating rumors were true.
“She has confirmed to me she had an affair with David,” John Charles alleged during a 2004 interviw with the Daily Mail. David, meanwhile, dismissed the allegations as false.
“During the past few months I have become accustomed to reading more and more ludicrous stories about my private life,” the athlete said in a statement. “The simple truth is that I am very happily married. I have a wonderful wife and two very special kids. There is nothing any third party can do to change these facts.”
Years later, David and Victoria both opened up about the affair rumors in the 2023 Netflix documentary Beckham.
“It was the hardest period [of our marriage] because it felt like the world was against us,” Victoria recalled. “Here’s the thing — we were against each other, if I’m being completely honest.”
She added that the tumultuous period was a “nightmare” for the couple. “Up until Madrid, sometimes it felt like us against everybody else, but we were together, we were connected, we had each other,” the fashion designer explained. “But when we were in Spain, it didn’t really feel like we had each other either. And that’s sad. I can’t even begin to tell you how hard it was and how it affected me.”
David, meanwhile, got emotional talking about the challenging time in the duo’s marriage.
“I don’t know how we got through it, in all honesty,” he confessed. “Victoria is everything to me, to see her hurt was incredibly difficult, but we’re fighters. And at that time, we needed to fight for each other, we needed to fight for our family. And what we had was worth fighting for. But ultimately, it is our private life.”

Having survived the infidelity scandal, the pair continued to grow their family: The Spice World star announced in late August that she was pregnant for a third time.

The couple’s little one made his grand entrance into the world on February 21, 2005. “We’ve got a baby boy. His name is Cruz,” David shared with reporters outside a Madrid hospital, according to Reuters. “He is beautiful. He is in there with his brothers now and he is very happy.”
