Celebrity Couples Who Are High School Sweethearts

By Michael May 27, 2024

Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins, Stephen Curry and Ayesha Curry and more celebrity couples were first linked in high school.

The country music star met Akins when they were in grade school in Georgia. Fast forward to high school and things turned romantic between them. While their relationship hit a roadblock when they were teenagers, they got back together after college and tied the knot in October 2012.

“We dated once when we were 15, and it didn’t work out. We dated for like six months,” Rhett told Taste of Country ahead of their nuptials. “We remained best friends even after we broke up. We both dated other people for like five years. When I heard that she had ended her other relationship … I moved in for the kill. We kissed, and that was it.”

Stephen and Ayesha are another celebrity couple who bonded through their faith as teens.

“I wasn’t allowed to date in high school,” Ayesha told Parents Magazine about meeting the future NBA star when she was 14. “We always laugh that we were both focused on God.” The athlete added, “I always had my eye on her, but I got a little shaken, for sure.”

After years as friends, the twosome started dating in their early 20s. “I was 23; she was 22. But I knew I had found the right woman and I wanted to start a life with her,” Stephen said.

Clayton Kershaw and Ellen Melson
The pitcher met his future wife as a freshman in high school in Texas and got engaged when they were 21.
“Ellen and I started dating our freshman year of high school. I think for us we were just more of friends, and then started dating. It kind of stayed that way through high school,” he told Risen Magazine. “I would say we got closer when she went to college and I started playing professionally. We both kind of figured out stuff on our own. I think that really helped our relationship now. As for when she became The One? I really don’t know. I guess somewhere late in high school, or early college.”

LeBron James and Savannah Brinson
The basketball asked out Brinson, who went to his rival high school in Ohio, when she was 16. After he was drafted as the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft in 2003, Brinson, who was still in high school, learned she was pregnant.
“Savannah was with me shooting in the gym when I [had] absolutely nothing,” he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2018. “She was down when I was at my high school, no cameras, no lights. And she was there with me. You wouldn’t be talking to me right now if it weren’t for her.”
The couple share Bronny (born 2004), Bryce (2007) and Zhuri (2014) and exchanged vows in September 2013.
Bono and Ali Hewson
“We were teenagers, we went to the same school, high school. It just so happens it was this afternoon I walked her to her bus — isn’t that mad?” the musician recalled to Extra in 2016.
The duo, who got married in 1982, are the parents of four kids: Jordan (born 1989), Eve (1991), Elijah (1999) and John (2001).

Kendrick Lamar and Whitney Alford
The rapper met and started dating Alford while attending Centennial High School in Compton, California.
“I wouldn’t even call her my girl,” he told Billboard in 2015 before he popped the question. “That’s my best friend. I don’t even like the term that society has put in the world as far as being a companion — she’s somebody I can tell my fears to.”
Us broke the news in July 2019 that the engaged duo welcomed their first child.
Jeff Daniels and Kathleen Treado
The actor married his high school sweetheart Kathleen in 1979. They are the parents of sons Ben (born 1984) and Lucas (1987) and daughter Nellie (1990).

Snoop Dogg and Shante Broadus
While the musician married his teenage love in 1997, they briefly called it quits in 2004, even filing for divorce.
“It was up to me to try to put it back together because I’m the one who said I didn’t want to be a part of it no more … It’s hard now to this day,” he told Larry King after they reconciled. “There’s a lot of roller coaster to a relationship. You know, we’ve been together for 17 or 18 years. We’ve been married for 10 years, but, at the same time, it’s like, you know, some people in life are chosen for you. And I feel like we’re chosen for each other.”
The duo — who share sons Corde (born 1994), Cordell (1997) and Julian (1998) and daughter Cori (1999) — renewed their vows in 2008.
