Amy Schumer went from a hustling stand-up comedian to a major movie star.
“After my dad got MS and we went bankrupt and my mom left him, that period from age 12 to 15 was a really rough time,” Schumer recalled to GQ in a 2015 profile. “And we all suffered from it, my siblings and I. It was just a major struggle, more so than most kids should ever have to deal with.”
As a way to help make ends meet, Schumer started performing comedy sets.
“It made me fearless and unbreakable and so strong — and a leader and maternal,” she added to the outlet.
Schumer’s comedy bits often roasted her dating life.
“I think I get labeled a sex comic just because I’m a woman,” she told Entertainment Weekly in 2015. “I feel like a guy could get up here and literally pull his d**k out and everyone would be like, ‘He’s a thinker!’”
Schumer eventually settled down in 2018, marrying chef Chris Fischer after a few months of dating. They welcomed their son, Gene, the next year.

2007
Schumer competed on season 5 of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, in which a group of aspiring comedians went head-to-head to secure a talent deal with the network. While her jokes frequently impressed the crowds and judges alike, Schumer ultimately lost to Jon Reep.
2013
Schumer landed her own sketch comedy series, Inside Amy Schumer, on Comedy Central. The show, which ended in 2016, won a Peabody Award and was nominated for eight Emmy Awards.
2015
Schumer made the leap to film, starring in Trainwreck, which she also wrote. The movie, directed by Judd Apatow, starred Saturday Night Live alum Bill Hader as her onscreen love interest.
The next year, Schumer’s The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo memoir was published.
2018
Us Weekly broke the news in November 2017 that Schumer started dating Fischer, several months before he popped the question. They wed in February 2018.
2019
Schumer and Fisher became parents in May, welcoming son Gene.
“10:55 p.m. last night, our royal baby was born,” she wrote via Instagram.
Schumer was pregnant at the same time as Meghan Markle, which became a fixture in her stand-up set.
2021
Schumer revealed in September that she had her uterus removed after battling endometriosis.
“The doctor found 30 spots of endometriosis that he removed. He removed my appendix because the endometriosis had attacked it,” she said in a social media video. “There was a lot, a lot of blood in my uterus and I’m, you know, sore and I have some, like, gas pains. But, other than that, I already feel that my energy is [returning].”
Schumer later told The Hollywood Reporter that her uterus “didn’t contract for two and a half years” after she gave birth to her son.
2022
She created and starred in Hulu’s Life & Beth, which ran through 2024, alongside Fischer. (Schumer’s husband was credited as a writing consultant on the show.)
“It’s constant collaboration between us,” Schumer exclusively told Us in May 2024. “He’s so supportive, and I would never say anything he’s not comfortable with.”
The second season of Life & Beth revealed that her TV husband, John (Michael Cera), was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, much like Fischer himself.
2024
Schumer was diagnosed with Cushing syndrome, which is brought on by high doses of steroid injections, and characterized by a round, red and full face.
“I feel reborn. There are a few types of Cushing. Some that can be fatal, require brain surgery or removal of adrenal glands,” Schumer said in a February issue of the “News Not Noise” newsletter. “While I was doing press on camera for my Hulu show, I was also in MRI machines four hours at a time, having my veins shut down from the amount of blood drawn and thinking I may not be around to see my son grow up.”
According to Schumer, her “kind of Cushing” would eventually “work itself out.”
2025
Schumer teamed up with Jillian Bell, Will Forte, Brianne Howey and Damon Wayans Jr. in Netflix’s Kinda Pregnant. Schumer, who starred as Lainey, cowrote the film with Julie Paiva.
“I read the script when I was three months postpartum [and] I had never read anything that related so closely to where I was currently at in my life,” Howey told Us in February. “It was the fastest page-turner. I laughed at every joke.”
