Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Alex Vesia shared that he and wife Kayla Vesia are in therapy following the death of their daughter, Sterling Sol.
“Kay and I started therapy about six weeks ago. It hasn’t been easy,” the baseball player, 29, read from a prepared statement while speaking to reporters on Friday, February 13, as he reported to spring training. “But talking to someone has made a difference.”
Alex continued, “For those out there who have lost a child or are fighting through any struggle, if you can take anything from this, please seek help. Talk to somebody. It’s definitely helped Kay and I. Please don’t be afraid to speak up. Your mental health matters.”
Alex and Kayla announced in November 2025 that their daughter, Sterling Sol, “went to heaven.”

“There are no words to describe the pain we’re going through but we hold her in our hearts and cherish every second we had with her,” the couple captioned a social media statement at the time. “Thank you to the Dodgers for their understanding and support during this time. Our baseball family showed up for us and we wouldn’t be able to do this without them.”
Alex sat out the entirety of the 2025 World Series last fall while grieving his daughter’s death. (The Dodgers ultimately won the championship over the Toronto Blue Jays.)
“The lessons we’ve learned from this is that life can change in an instant. 10 minutes is all it took. Sterling Sol was the most beautiful girl in the world,” Alex said on Friday. “We got to hold her, change her diaper, read to her and love her. Our time together was far too short. Kay and I will keep those precious moments and memories to ourselves. I hope that anyone listening can empathize and respect our wishes for privacy as we continue to heal, and as we navigate the ups and downs of baseball season.”
He added that his decision to step away from the team during the postseason last year was “difficult” yet “easy” at the same time.
“My family needed me. We still watched every pitch of the World Series,” he continued. “And for us, in so many ways, that was a light in our darkness.”

Alex also expressed his gratitude for the community who has been there since his family’s tragic loss.
“I’ve learned that what has happened to us has also happened to so many families. And realizing that has deepened our empathy and our gratitude for this community,” he reflected. “The baseball community is extremely strong. I was not prepared to not bring my baby girl home, but we’re carrying her with us every day. It’s been hard but we’re doing OK.”
Amid his grief, Alex shared that preparing for the upcoming baseball season has helped him cope with the loss.
“We got back to Arizona the first or second of November, and I immediately got back into the gym. I started my throwing program. Having something to look forward to has helped me,” he explained. “The gym has been my mental clarity. Being around the guys again, preparing for spring training, it’s been really nice. [I’ve] gotten a lot of love so far in the clubhouse, and being able to laugh and joke around, that’s been really nice for me.”
