Inside ‘Full House’ Stars Candace Cameron Bure and Jodie Sweetin’s Relationship

DJ and Stephanie Tanner have been close on and off screen for several decades — but have things taken a turn in Candace Cameron Bure and Jodie Sweetin’s relationship?

Cameron Bure, Sweetin and the cast of Full House — which also includes John Stamos, Dave Coulier, Andrea Barber, Lori Loughlin, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, and the late Bob Saget— have made headlines for reunions since the original sitcom ended in 1995.

In addition to friendly reunions, Cameron Bure and Sweetin’s opposing political affiliations — Cameron Bure is a vocal conservative while Sweetin is a liberal — has garnered attention as well, even though the TV sisters are usually able to put aside their differences.

When Cameron Bure came under fire in November 2022 for saying she chose Great American Family over Hallmark Channel because of the network keeping “traditional marriage at the core” in its movies, things seemingly changed between the pair.

Sweetin publicly backed the LGBTQ+ community while Cameron Bure became the center of unwanted negative attention. So where do they stand now?

In her 2009 memoir, Sweetin revealed that she got drunk for the first time at Cameron Bure’s wedding to Valeri Bure. “I probably had two bottles of wine, and I was only 14. That first drink gave me the self-confidence I had been searching for my whole life. But that set the pattern of the kind of drinking that I would do,” she wrote in unSweetined.

Cameron Bure publicly supported Sweetin amid her messy breakup from fiancé Justin Hodak, which ended in an emergency protective order and allegations of drug abuse.
“She’s doing great. She’s being a trooper and handling everything with grace,” Cameron Bure told E! News in April 2017. “We’re all super supportive of her, so she’s good. She’s in a very good place.”

After facing backlash for comments about a bakery refusing to make a cake for a lesbian couple’s wedding in 2015, Cameron Bure said during a 2016 TCA panel that she was “100 percent on board” with Fuller House’s characters exploring “whatever issues that are current in our culture and our society today.” Two years later, the Netflix show revealed Sweetin’s character was bisexual.
“Jodie switched up the line in that take and we weren’t expecting it, so it was everyone’s true reaction and we broke,” Cameron Bure tweeted about the scene in which Stephanie joked about having a girlfriend. “So they kept it in.”

November 2022
Cameron Bure announced her exit from Hallmark Channel after more than a decade of working for the network, following former CEO Bill Abbott to his new venture, Great American Family. Months later, she opened up about her reasoning, ruffling a few feathers in the process.
“I knew that the people behind Great American Family were Christians that love the Lord and wanted to promote faith programming and good family entertainment,” Cameron Bure told The Wall Street Journal’s WSJ. Magazine in November 2022, adding that the network “will keep traditional marriage at the core” when asked about LGBTQ+ movies.
Her remarks caused controversy with fans and celebs alike, including JoJo Siwa, who publicly feuded with Cameron Bure earlier that year after calling the Full House alum the rudest celebrity she’d ever met.
“I would like to address my comments on Great American Family’s programming as reported in The Wall Street Journal. All of you who know me, know beyond question that I have great love and affection for all people. It absolutely breaks my heart that anyone would ever think I intentionally would want to offend and hurt anyone. It saddens me that the media is often seeking to divide us, even around a subject as comforting and merry as Christmas movies. But, given the toxic climate in our culture right now, I shouldn’t be surprised. We need Christmas more than ever,” Cameron Bure wrote in a statement amid the backlash. “I am a devoted Christian. Which means that I believe that every human being bears the image of God. Because of that, I am called to love all people, and I do. If you know me, you know that I am a person who loves fiercely and indiscriminately. My heart yearns to build bridges and bring people one step closer to God, to love others well, and to simply be a reflection of God’s huge love for all of us.”
She continued: “I have long wanted to find a home for more faith-based programming. I am grateful to be an integral part of a young and growing network. I had also expressed in my interview, which was not included, that people of all ethnicities and identities have and will continue to contribute to the network in great ways both in front of and behind the camera, which I encourage and fully support. I’ve never been interested in proselytizing through my storytelling, but in celebrating God’s greatness in our lives through the stories I tell. The God we serve is a wildly creative and loving God. He didn’t just capture a small part of my heart, He has captured all of my heart. He will be reflected in everything I do and say; in my family, my work and my interactions with people from all walks of life, God’s love and God’s compassion is front and center.”
Sweetin, meanwhile, seemingly backed Siwa after she clapped back at Cameron Bure’s “traditional marriage” remarks.
“You know I love you ❤️❤️,” Sweetin commented on Siwa’s Instagram post at the time.

Shortly after Sweetin shared a positive message to JoJo Siwa amid Cameron Bure’s Great American Family drama, eagle-eyed fans then discovered that Cameron Bure was no longer following Sweetin on Instagram.
“I’m not gonna unfollow anybody!” Sweetin later said in response. “I don’t live my life based on social media. I think it can be used for some great things, and I also think it can be really negative and full of a lot of s***, particularly these days.”
She added, “Unfollow me, don’t follow, whatevs. People announce their departure. It’s like, ‘Cool, yeah, goodbye! You live in f***ing Wyoming. I don’t know you!’ And if people I do know unfollow me because of what I passionately believe in, then we are just very different people.”

Bure teased a reunion with Sweetin via Instagram. “It’s a FULL HOUSE BABY! We’re comin’ back to #90scon and OH MY LANTA I can hardly wait! Mark your calendars, book your plane ticket, and meet us in Hartford CT on March 18th and 19th!” she captioned a promotional photo of herself, Sweetin, Coulier and Barber. The Christmas Contest actress tagged her TV sister in the post despite previously unfollowing her on the social media platform.

During the 2024 Summer Olympics, Sweetin and Cameron Bure found themselves taking conflicting stances  on the Opening Ceremony. After watching a scene that seemingly evoked Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” Cameron Bure expressed her “disappointment” at event organizers after they chose to allegedly “mock the Christian faith.”
Sweetin, however, saw a different interpretation when she shared a post from activist Matt Bernstein. “The drag queens at the Olympics were recreating the feast of Dionysus, not the Last Supper,” the graphic stated. “And even if you thought it was a Christian reference — what’s the harm? Why is it a ‘parody’ and not a tribute? Can drag queens not be Christian too?”

Nearly one year after Sweetin and Cameron Bure expressed a difference of opinions over the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony — Cameron Bure took issue with the ceremony allegedly mocking “the Christian faith,” while Sweetin thought the twist on “The Last Supper,” including LGBTQ+ icon Barbara Butch wearing a silver headdress with drag artists surrounding her, was a cool take on art history — Sweetin revealed her remarks had nothing to do with her former costar.
“To be honest, I wasn’t speaking about her,” Sweetin clarified on the April 28 episode of “The Vault” podcast. “There was already something that had happened where we went on a divergent path, and then I saw the Olympics thing and how people were freaking out about it, so I said, ‘Oh my God, tell me you don’t know anything about art history without telling me you know nothing,’ and everyone was like, ‘She came for Candace!’”
Sweetin recalled learning about her alleged jab at Cameron Bure, which totally caught her off guard. “And I was like, ‘What the…?’ I was like getting a massage or something, and I came out to all of this, and I was like, ‘What did I…? Oh, she said … ohhhhhh. Well, I guess that’s it!’” she said.
While Sweetin insisted her support of the opening ceremony was not a dig against Cameron Bure’s conservative values, she stands by her comments. “I’m not changing anything I said,” she added. “But it was not an intentional dig. But it was still what I wanted to say.”

December 2025
Sweetin gave a rare update on her relationship with Cameron Bure during the December 16 episode of “The Moment” podcast, saying, “She was the closest thing I had to a sister. We fought like sisters, even when we were kids, that’s the relationship we had.”
Sweetin explained, “Candace’s faith, to be quite honest, has always been at the forefront for her, and I have zero problem with that.”
She noted, “I have no problem with religion if it brings you peace and happiness, not necessarily saying that her brand of religion is not necessarily peace and happiness. I don’t really know. I do know that I don’t think you can truly love people if you don’t respect them.”
While Cameron Bure has been vocal about her religious beliefs, Sweetin claimed she didn’t “want to take on the political side as much.”
“She [wanted to] keep that out of her brand or whatever, and I just don’t really care about my brand,” Sweetin said. “If there’s people who don’t like what I’m saying or are like, ‘I like you as Stephanie but I don’t like you as you.’ It’s, like, ‘Great, watch Full House and don’t follow me online.’ It’s OK, you don’t have to like me, but I try not to let other people’s perceptions of who I should be … put up any barriers of what I want to be. Candace and I are very different in that regard.”
Sweetin added that Cameron Bure has “kept a little more quiet” about politics, while she’s “always been loud” about her opinions.

Sweetin offered a rare comment on Cameron Bure’s political stance during an appearance on the “Only Child With Bob the Drag Queen” podcast.
“Candace does her thing and, you know, we sit on very opposite sides of things and I’m just, kind of, a loud outspoken bitch about a lot of things, and that’s not going to stop me and if that ain’t you, that ain’t you,” Sweetin said.
