Heather McComb and husband Scott Michael Campbell’s wedding day featured a few “magical” moments from loved ones who are no longer with them — including a blessing from her late ex-husband, James Van Der Beek.
“I just want to say that the love and respect and admiration I have for Kimberly [Van Der Beek] is unparalleled, and the appreciation I have for their love is beyond,” McComb, 49, exclusively told Us Weekly on Monday, June 8, while reflecting on James’ bond with his second wife, Kimberly, 44, whom he wed in 2010 after his divorce from McComb was finalized.
McComb called the Dawson’s Creek alum and Kimberly “true soulmates” who were so supportive of her own road to happiness prior to James’ death in February. (James died at the age of 48 following a battle with colorectal cancer.)
“I will share one thing [about our last encounter] because I think it’s beautiful,” McComb told Us, noting that James blessed her marriage prior to his passing. “James and Kimberly both knew that Scott and I were getting married and they both were so full of love and support and excitement.”
She continued, “I know that James would want me to celebrate our love, just like he celebrated the love that he had for Kimberly, which was so beautiful.”
When it came to her and Campbell’s May 30 ceremony, McComb revealed that there were signs that James was watching over the couple.
“I know we had a lot of people up in heaven shining on us that day,” she shared. “It was magical in the sense that we saw a double rainbow, two ladybugs and two white doves.”

McComb explained, “I feel that is significant to Scott and I spiritually, and all the people that we lost, and we honor everybody who wasn’t there that day.”
McComb, who was married to James from 2003 to 2010, revealed that there are “so many amazing memories” she shared with the late actor, but knowing he was supportive of her and Campbell’s union is something she will always cherish.
“Just to have his blessing on this marriage was something that I will always hold on my heart,” she told Us. “I think that when I look back, that is really what I hold in my heart — is just how he loved [others] was a beautiful thing. How he loved everybody in his life, especially Kimberly and those beautiful kids.”
James Van Der Beek’s Ex-Wife Heather McComb Reacts to His Death at Age 48
McComb fell in love with James when they were in their 20s, tying the knot in 2003. The pair, both actors, announced their separation in April 2009. They finalized their divorce the following year.
James moved on with Kimberly, whom he wed in 2010, and the couple went on to welcome six children.
In November 2024, the Varsity Blues actor announced that he was diagnosed with stage III colorectal cancer in August 2023. His family confirmed on February 11 that he died after fighting the illness.
McComb was one of many celebrities who paid tribute to James following his death, sharing a throwback photo of the pair from his 21st birthday.
“I am heartbroken over the loss of beloved James. I am especially heartbroken for his incredible wife Kimberly, his beautiful children and his amazing family, Jim, Jared, Juliana and all of his family and friends who I know he loved deeply,” McComb wrote via Instagram at the time. “This picture is from my 21st birthday. Dawsons Creek hadn’t even aired yet. This is how I will always see James innocent, kind and pure of heart.”
The Incarcerated actress recalled the “journey” she shared with James, one filled with “friendship and love” that she said “endured through decades.”
Heather McComb and Husband Scott Michael Campbell’s Relationship Timeline
“I will treasure the last loving words we exchanged. James was a beautiful soul filled with so much light, love, talent, humor, depth, sensitivity, knowledge and a deep love of God that shined through him,” McComb continued. “He shined so bright yet was so humble and human. Always searching, always growing, always going deeper, always chasing things outside his comfort zone.”
She concluded by asking God to hold Kimberly and their children “in your arms” and thanked him for bringing James’ “beautiful soul into the world and into all of our lives.”
Less than four months later, McComb found another reason to smile while marrying Campbell, 54, in Missoula, Montana, surrounded by their loved ones near and far.
“I am so happy. I mean, I got to marry my best friend in the whole world,” McComb gushed to Us on Monday. “I always say he’s my favorite toy. I get to play with my favorite toy for the rest of my life. That’s really how I feel.”
After nearly two weeks as husband and wife, McComb said she loves being “Mrs. Campbell” and “I love being Scott’s wife.”
“I’m so excited and ready for it,” she said of their future together. “I know the levity of the commitment we made under the covenant of God, and I am just so excited to step up and be the most amazing wife to him, I really am.”
