NBA’s Derek Fisher and Gloria Govan Split After 5 Years of Marriage

Former NBA player Derek Fisher and wife Gloria Govan have split after five years of marriage, but are not throwing in the towel on their relationship.

The couple’s spokesperson confirmed to TMZ on Friday, July 24, that Fisher, 51, and the Basketball Wives alum, 41, have been living separately. The pair are in constant communication and attempting to work through their issues. They have no plans to divorce at this time, per the outlet.

Us has reached out to Fisher and Govan’s spokesperson for comment.

Fisher and Govan started dating in 2015 following the pair’s splits from their respective spouses. Govan was in a longtime relationship with basketball player Matt Barnes, who was teammates with Fisher on the Los Angeles Lakers, before they wed in 2012. The exes, who share twins Carter Kelly and Isaiah Michaell, 17, split in 2014 and finalized their divorce two years later.

Derek, for his part, tied the knot with first wife Candace Fisher in 2005. The pair welcomed twins Tatum and Drew in June 2006. Derek is also father to daughter Chloe from a previous relationship. Candace was also mother to son Marshall from a previous relationship. Derek and Candace separated in 2015 after a decade of marriage and finalized their divorce the following year.

When Derek and Govan first started dating, the athlete got into an alleged altercation with Barnes in October. No charges were filed against the basketball players following the incident. However, Barnes was given a two-game suspension at the time.

Govan and Derek got engaged in 2018 after three years of dating. The pair wed three years later at Cielo Farms in Malibu.

“For Derek and me, our wedding has been about unity and a blending of families,” Govan said of her and Derek’s nuptials in a July 2021 interview with People. “After the pandemic, we realized how important family really is. We could have easily eloped or filled out the paperwork and gotten it over with. But sharing this moment and event with those closest to us took priority over taking the easy route. We kept our guest list limited to those closest to us.”

Govan added that since she and Derek were both married before, they were taking the lessons they learned in their past relationships to make theirs stronger.

“For both of us, this is our second marriage. The most exciting part about this time around is all the growth we bring to the relationship,” she recalled. “The trials and tribulations we’ve experienced have played a huge part in who we are in our relationship today. From the start, we’ve been very honest about our expectations from our friendship to marriage.”
