Clark has to navigate lethal kung-fu combat, deadly supernatural booby traps, and the terrifying realization that his path to his true destiny is getting more dangerous with every step. Episode Review

Welcome back to the rewatch! “Sacred” is a massive, action-packed episode that leans heavily into the mystical adventure side of Smallville. Directed by Brad Turner and written by Kelly Souders and Brian Peterson, this episode drops us right into the middle of Season 4’s season-long treasure hunt. We get a great blend of classic globe-trotting adventure tropes, family betrayals, and big steps toward Clark’s ultimate fate.

• Jane Seymour as Genevieve Teague: While not a traditional meteor-infected “Freak of the Week,” Genevieve serves as the episode’s primary antagonist and orchestrator. Best known for Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman and her iconic role as Solitaire in the James Bond film Live and Let Die, Seymour brings fantastic campy, high-class villainy to the Teague family matriarch.
• Christopher Reeve as Dr. Virgil Swann (mentioned/tribute): While Christopher Reeve sadly passed away before this aired, his character’s presence and legacy heavy-hang over the hunt for the stones, making this episode a heartfelt continuation of his contributions to the show. I didn’t really expect the feels after this amount of time has passed, but the way this was handled in the opening was beautiful.

Special Effects & Production

Look, we love Smallville, but mid-2000s TV budgets trying to pull off a blockbuster action movie vibe definitely show their seams here! The exterior shots attempting to sell Vancouver as downtown Shanghai are a valiant effort, packed with plenty of colorful banners and atmospheric fog.

The visual effects for the ancient temple, the glowing Kryptonian symbols, and the magical forcefields guarding the Stone of Air hold up reasonably well for the era. However, the green-screen wirework during the martial arts sequences definitely dips into cheesiness. When Clark gets thrown around or when characters do exaggerated wire-fu flips, the physics look a bit floaty. Still, the practical set design for the hidden chamber and the fun atmospheric lighting make up for the dated CGI.

Music

The score by Mark Snow does a lot of heavy lifting here, trading in the usual teen-angst pop-rock for sweeping, cinematic orchestral tracks that feel right out of an Indiana Jones film.

An ambitious, fast-paced episode that pushes the main arc forward in a huge way. Minor CGI hiccups aside, the chemistry between the main cast and the addition of Jane Seymour make this one a blast to watch.

Complete Synopsis & Plot Breakdown

The episode kicks off following the news of Dr. Virgil Swann’s death. Clark receives a final package from Dr. Swann containing a key and a message pointing him toward the second Kryptonian Stone of Power (the Stone of Air), hidden deep within a subterranean temple in China. Recognizing the danger if Lex or anyone else finds it first, Clark plans to head to Shanghai immediately.

Meanwhile, Lana receives a mysterious parcel containing a map and a parchment related to her ancestor, Isobel Thoreaux. Unbeknownst to her, Jason’s mother, Genevieve Teague, has been pulling strings behind the scenes to manipulate both Lana and Jason into retrieving the stone. Lana decides to fly to China to follow the clues, and Jason follows closely behind.

Lex, always three steps ahead, learns of the sudden surge of interest in Shanghai and offers Clark a ride on the LuthorCorp jet under the guise of helping him track down Lana. Once in Shanghai, the group splits up, but the tension is high. Clark uses his superpowers discretely to navigate the city, leading him to an ancient temple beneath a local museum.

Inside the temple, Clark encounters Jason Teague, who reveals a much darker, more obsessive side as he hunts for the artifact. Before they can settle things, Genevieve’s hired mercenaries ambushes them. Clark is forced to hold back his powers to keep his secret safe, resulting in a martial arts showdown where he has to rely on pure strength and strategy rather than just speeding through everyone.

Lana, possessed by the spirit of Isobel Thoreaux whenever she is near the ancient magic, breaks into the inner sanctum. Isobel effortlessly bypasses the deadly traps designed to stop normal humans. Clark catches up just as Isobel reaches the altar where the glowing Stone of Air rests.

When Isobel touches the stone, a massive surge of energy erupts, knocking her out and freeing Lana from the possession. Clark steps up to claim the stone. As he touches it, he experiences a vivid, overwhelming vision of the three stones coming together and the impending doom facing Earth if he fails his mission. Clark safely pockets the stone before Lex and his security team breach the chamber. Clark manages to slip away unnoticed, leaving Lex frustrated and empty-handed once again.

Back in Smallville, Clark hides the second stone in the cellar alongside the first stone he recovered. Jason and Lana’s relationship is left fractured by the endless lies and his mother’s interference. Lex confronts Genevieve, making it clear that he knows she’s playing a dangerous game. The episode wraps up with Clark reflecting on Dr. Swann’s legacy and coming to terms with the reality that his destiny is rapidly catching up to him.

Lessons Learned & The Path to Superman

“Sacred” is a huge stepping stone (pun intended) for Clark’s emotional and heroic maturity.

• The Burden of Legacy: With the passing of Dr. Virgil Swann, Clark loses his primary guide to understanding his Kryptonian heritage. He realizes he can no longer rely on mentors to tell him what to do—he has to take initiative, make hard choices, and step into the role of Earth’s protector on his own.
• Global Responsibility: Up to this point, most of Clark’s heroics have been contained within the small town of Smallville or nearby Metropolis. Traveling across the world to secure a weapon of absolute power reinforces that his responsibility isn’t just to his farm or his friends; it’s to the entire planet.
• Resisting Temptation and Power: Unlike the Teagues or Lex, who seek the stones for control, dominance, or personal obsession, Clark seeks them out strictly to keep the world safe. This selflessness and moral clarity are the core traits that will eventually define him as Superman.
