Smallville S4 E19: Blank

Smallville S4 E19: Blank

Preview

When a routine day in Smallville goes sideways, Clark Kent finds himself completely stripped of his identity—and his memories! After stumbling upon a robbery at the Talon, Clark gets a brain-zapping touch from a meteor-powered runaway who wipes his mental hard drive clean. Left wandering without a clue about who he is, who his friends are, or why he can suddenly see through solid walls and toss pickup trucks like cardboard boxes, Clark must rely on the people around him to rebuild his life from scratch.

Luckily, Chloe Sullivan steps up to serve as his unofficial tour guide and superhero coach, helping him navigate high school halls and alien abilities without blowing his cover. But with Lex Luthor hovering around trying to exploit Clark’s blank slate to uncover the elusive Kryptonian stones, Clark has to figure out who he can genuinely trust before his past catches up to him in dangerous ways.

Episode Review

“Blank” is widely regarded as one of the best standalone episodes of Season 4, and for very good reason. Season 4 got pretty tangled up in witches, Isobel lore, and high school football drama, so stripping everything back to a clean character study is a massive breath of fresh air. My favorite episode in this seasons rewatch to date.

The real magic here is Chloe Sullivan. She secretly discovered Clark’s secret earlier in the season during “Pariah,” but Clark had no idea she knew. Watching Chloe seamlessly guide an amnesiac Clark through using his superpowers—without ever taking advantage of him or making him feel weird—is delightful. It provides the foundation for the Clark/Chloe partnership that carries much of the mid-series. Tom Welling also shines here; he plays the confused, wide-eyed Clark with pure innocence and great comedic timing, especially during his re-introductions to Lana and Lex.

Who Stars in the Episode

  • Tom Welling as Clark Kent
  • Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang
  • Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor
  • Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan
  • Annette O’Toole as Martha Kent
  • John Schneider as Jonathan Kent
  • Camille Mitchell as Sheriff Nancy Adams

Freak of the Week:

  • Jonathan Bennett as Kevin Grady: Fresh off playing Aaron Samuels in Mean Girls (2004), Bennett delivers a surprisingly nuanced and sympathetic performance as Kevin. Unlike many one-note “Freaks of the Week” who turn evil just for fun, Kevin is a scared teen who used his memory-wiping ability defensively to escape an abusive father. He turns to good in the end saving Clark’s secret.

Special Effects

The visual effects in “Blank” are a mixed bag typical of 2005 network television.

  • The Good: The X-ray vision effect through the Talon bathroom door looks slick, and Clark discovering super-speed for the “first” time is shot with fun kinetic energy.
  • The Cheesy: The ripple effect used whenever Kevin wipes someone’s memory looks a bit like an early Adobe After Effects default transition. When Clark catches a bullet near the climax, the CGI bullet itself has that signature early-2000s polygonal shine, but the sequence still lands because of the dramatic tension.

Music & Track Listing

Season 4 always brought top-tier mid-2000s alt-rock and pop needle drops.

  • “24” by Jem (Plays in the Talon during the opening scene)
  • “Satie” by Paco (Heard in the background when Clark’s X-ray vision kicks in at the Talon)
  • “Let Me Go” by 3 Doors Down (Clark and Lana talking in the hallway at school)
  • “This Is Your Life” by Switchfoot (The poignant closing montage as Clark sketches the stones and talks with Lana)

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 Stars

Complete Synopsis and Plot Breakdown

The episode kicks off at the Talon, where Lois Lane is closing up shop. A young guy named Kevin Grady tries to rob the register, and when Lois confronts him, he touches her forehead, instantly wiping her memory of the encounter. Clark walks in right as Kevin attempts to slip away. Clark pursues him outside and corners him, but Kevin touches Clark’s head, unleashing a massive mental shockwave.

Clark wanders through town completely disoriented. Sheriff Adams spots him and takes him home to the Kent farm, where Martha is shocked to realize her son doesn’t recognize her or remember his own name. While trying to help him adjust, Clark accidentally rips a door off its hinges and triggers his heat vision on the kitchen counter, terrifying himself. Martha gently explains to him that he is adopted and possesses extraordinary gifts that must remain hidden.

The next day, Martha sends Clark to school hoping familiar surroundings will trigger his memory. Naturally, high school without memory is a minefield. Chloe immediately realizes something is wrong when Clark doesn’t know where his locker is or who Lana is. When Clark accidentally super-speeds across the hallway to avoid dropping books, Chloe pulls him into the Torch office. Instead of freaking out, she reveals that she already knows he has abilities and offers to be his guide.

Meanwhile, Lex visits the farm and realizes Clark is an open book. Lex uses the opportunity to press Clark about the mysterious elements and the map to the three Kryptonian stones, even bringing Clark to the Luthor mansion to inspect a replica of the cave symbols.

Chloe and Clark investigate Kevin and learn he has been staying at the Summerholt Neurological Institute. Kevin’s father, who runs a memory clinic, has been systematically erasing Kevin’s memories to cover up his own crimes. Kevin targets his father to stop him for good.

Clark and Chloe track Kevin to Summerholt just as Kevin’s father pulls a gun. When the father fires a shot at Chloe, Clark instinctively moves at super-speed and catches the bullet barehanded, proving that his hero instinct exists even without his memory. Kevin, seeing Clark’s bravery and innocence, touches Clark again, restoring all of his memories.

Back at the farm, Clark thanks Chloe for being such an incredible friend, solidifying their dynamic. Later in the barn loft, Clark looks over drawings of the Kryptonian symbols, realizing how close Lex came to manipulating him.

Lessons & The Road to Superman

  • Heroism is Core, Not Learned: “Blank” answers a fundamental question about Superman: is Clark Kent a hero because of his upbringing, or is he intrinsically good? Even when stripped of all memories, morals taught by Jonathan and Martha, and knowledge of his alien lineage, Clark’s first instinct when Chloe is in danger is to put himself in harm’s way. The Superman ethos isn’t just data in his brain; it’s his default human (and Kryptonian) nature.
  • The Power of Trust: For years, Clark treated his secret like a toxic curse that would drive everyone away. This episode shows that sharing his burden with someone worthy—like Chloe—doesn’t weaken him; it makes him stronger and safer. It’s a huge step toward building his future circle of trusted allies.
  • The Lex Divide: Lex’s willingness to exploit Clark’s vulnerability to locate the stones highlights the tragic, irreparable fracture in their friendship. While Chloe uses Clark’s amnesia to protect him, Lex uses it to extract information. It is a stark reminder of why Clark can never truly let Lex into his world.
