Michael Douglas Recalls Talking to Rob Reiner About Sons Before His Death

Michael Douglas is opening up about his close connection with the late Rob Reiner, revealing their bond over their sons’ reported drug issues.

According to a Monday, October 5, excerpt from Douglas’ new memoir, One Helluva Ride, published by the Los Angeles Times, the actor, 82, recalled a conversation with Reiner prior to the director’s untimely death.

“We both had sons with serious drug issues and we both, at times, had been at the end of our rope.” Douglas wrote, per the outlet. “It was a heartbreaking confessional for us, but I know we gave each other some measure of comfort during the hard times.”

Michael’s son, Cameron Douglas, previously battled addiction issues and was arrested in 2009 for selling bulk quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine. Cameron, now 47, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years in prison the following year. In December 2011, he received an additional four and a half years behind bars after pleading guilty to possessing and smuggling drugs while incarcerated.

Cameron was released from prison in 2016, going on to write about his struggles in his memoir. He turned his life around and has been sober since.

Rob’s son Nick Reiner also had a longstanding history of substance abuse and went to rehab multiple times and before he allegedly killed his parents in what authorities say was a December 2025 attack.

Last year, Rob and wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead in their homes at ages 70 and 78, respectively. (Michele and Rob were also parents to Jake, 35, and Romy, 28. Rob was also a father to Tracy, whom he adopted while married to Penny Marshall.)

“Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day. The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience,” Jake and Romy said in a statement to TMZ. “They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”

One night before their deaths, Rob and Nick reportedly had a public argument with his father at Conan O’Brien‘s Christmas party. Nick was subsequently arrested and charged with his parents’ murders.

In February, Nick pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree murder. Prosecutors have confirmed they will not pursue the death penalty in Nick’s case.

“We did speak with Nick Reiner’s siblings, and they made their views very clear,” Los Angeles district attorney Nathan Hochman said, referring to Jake and Romy, during a September pretrial press conference. “We took their views into consideration in ultimately deciding not to seek the death penalty.”

Nick will return to court on October 23 for a probate hearing amid his fight for access to a family trust to help pay for his legal expenses.
