Smallville S3 E10 – Whisper

Smallville S3 E10 – Whisper

Preview

When Clark tries to be a hero, his powers literally bite him back. A simple jewelry store robbery goes sideways when a piece of Kryptonite reflects Clark’s heat vision right into his own eyes, leaving him temporarily blind. Talk about a cosmic headache. If that weren’t bad enough, the sudden loss of sight seems to trigger a brand-new ability, and let’s just say he’s suddenly hearing things he really wishes he hadn’t heard, like all the secrets his friends are keeping.

Meanwhile, Chloe finds herself dangerously over her head in the world of high-stakes corporate espionage. Her secret dealings with Lionel Luthor are about to blow up in her face, forcing her to choose a side in the ongoing war between the Luthors. With Clark struggling to master a chaotic new superpower, and his pal Pete Ross suddenly in the crosshairs of a vengeful, sonic-powered meteor freak, the only way Clark can save the day is by learning to listen to the chaos, literally.

Episode Review

This episode is a solid entry that goes back to the core Smallville formula, but gives it a classic Superman twist. It’s a genius move to introduce Clark’s Super Hearing by taking away his sight. It makes sense, in a sci-fi/Kryptonian kind of way, his body just goes, “Well, the optical sensor is down, let’s max out the audio!” This setup is fantastic because it makes Clark vulnerable and forces him to rely on his amazing adoptive parents, Jonathan and Martha, for some classic farm-based power training. It also creates some great tension when he starts unintentionally eavesdropping on all the Smallville High drama.

The emotional beats land well here. We get a massive step in the Clark/Lana saga when she brings up Adam Knight, a moment that always feels slightly painful to watch, and we see the start of a major fallout between Chloe and Lex when her secret work for Lionel is revealed. The episode is dark and tense when it needs to be, but the Kent family scenes keep it grounded and heartwarming. Overall, “Whisper” is a smart piece of mythology building disguised as a standard “Freak of the Week” episode.

Starring

  • Tom Welling as Clark Kent
  • Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang
  • Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor
  • Sam Jones III as Pete Ross
  • Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan
  • John Glover as Lionel Luthor
  • Annette O’Toole as Martha Kent
  • John Schneider as Jonathan Kent

Freak of the Week

Micah Alberti as Nathan Dean.

Nathan is our meteor freak this week, a guy with “banshee-type powers”—meaning he can project incredibly loud, targeted sonic blasts that can make a person temporarily deaf or just incapacitate them. He’s essentially using his scream as a weapon, which is a surprisingly effective and creepy ability. Alberti does a fine job making Nathan a dangerous, desperate menace without getting too over-the-top.

Special Effects

The special effects in “Whisper” are a mixed bag, which is standard for the early seasons of Smallville. The opening sequence where Clark’s heat vision reflects off the Kryptonite fragment and hits his eyes is a neat idea, but the resulting “flash” effect is pretty basic. The real special effects work is dedicated to the Super Hearing sequences. The visual distortion and layered sound effects when Clark is overloaded are actually really effective at conveying his sensory torture. However, Nathan Dean’s sonic blast effects—which often look like a simple, vibrating heat haze with a loud sound—are a little weak, especially when he uses them on Clark in the climactic scene. It’s not terrible, but definitely a 2004 TV budget effect.

Music Track Listing

  • “Future Proof” by Massive Attack (Heard during the opening robbery)
  • “So Far Away” by Staind (Played toward the end, during a scene with Clark and Lana)
  • “Cold and Empty” by Kid Rock (Played over the final montage when Lana drives away)

Rating

★★★★☆ (4/5 Stars)

Synopsis and Plot Breakdown

The Accident: The episode opens with Clark interrupting a robbery. When he uses his Heat Vision, a piece of Kryptonite jewelry near the door reflects the beam directly back into his face, blinding him. He manages to drive the thieves off, but he is now completely sightless. His parents take him to a specialized doctor, but Clark insists on keeping his condition secret.

The New Power: Clark soon discovers that his body has compensated for the vision loss by spontaneously developing Super Hearing. The new power is overwhelming and painful; he can hear everything from a bird flapping miles away to the internal mechanisms of a clock. The Kents help him train by having him focus on their voices in the noisy barn.

The Freak and the Kidnapping: One of the robbers Clark thwarted, a man named Masterson, is captured and put on trial before Judge Abigail Ross—Pete Ross’s mother. The second robber, Nathan Dean (the meteor freak with sonic powers), kidnaps Pete and calls Judge Ross to blackmail her: dismiss Masterson’s charges, or Pete dies.

Chloe’s Secret: While struggling to control his hearing, Clark unintentionally overhears a damning conversation between Chloe and Lionel Luthor. He discovers that Chloe has secretly been compiling information on him and Lex for Lionel, who is paying for her father’s extensive medical care and funding her career. He tells Lex and sets into motion the consequences for them and Chloe her losing her job as well as her dad. Lex fired him. When Clark confronts Lex, he makes it clear he knows everything still or at least it seems that way. “This way I was able to keep your name out of it.”

The Confrontation and Climax: A temporarily blind Clark attempts to use his Super Hearing to track the location of Pete’s captivity. He hears the tow truck that took Pete and jumps on for a ride to Nathan’s hideout. They escape but a blowtorch to the eyes starts to heal Clark. Clark finds Pete tied up in an abandoned junkyard. Nathan attacks Clark with his sonic scream, momentarily incapacitating the already sightless hero. Clark, just falls back into a stack of cars knocking them onto Nathan killing him very dead. Clark saves Pete from the crusher.

Fallout: Judge Ross steps down from the case. Chloe confronts Lionel, who brutally informs her that he has terminated her Daily Planet column, she threatens Lionel. Finally, Lana tells Clark that she has been spending time with Adam Knight and that she needs space from Clark, leading to a heartbreaking ending as Clark is left alone, silently watching Lana leave.

Lessons and Superman Connection

This episode is one of the most important in Clark’s journey because it introduces Super Hearing, an iconic Superman ability that is far more challenging for him to manage than flight or strength. The lesson here is twofold:

  1. Vulnerability & Adaptation: By taking away Clark’s sight, the episode highlights his deep vulnerability and forces him to adapt rather than just overpower. This is crucial for Superman’s psychology. He realizes that having powers doesn’t make him invincible; it just changes the nature of his challenges. His struggle to focus his hearing—sifting the important signal (Pete’s location) from the surrounding noise—is a metaphor for the discipline and focus he will need as an adult hero.
  2. The Price of Secrets: The painful discovery of Chloe’s betrayal teaches Clark a hard lesson about trust and the complicated reality of being connected to powerful people like the Luthors. Clark learns that good intentions (Chloe helping her father) can still lead to damaging consequences. This sense of isolation and the understanding that his own secret identity will inevitably harm those he cares about is a foundational realization that weighs on the future Superman, who must constantly protect his loved ones by keeping them at arm’s length. The blindness forces him to face these emotional truths without the comfort of his usual senses.

Review Notes

You both think your Supermen lol

Clarks right about Chloe, she was on his ass for keeping secrets, she did the same thing

Got specific with location… 3 hour drive to Metropolis.

That feels like an ending to Clark Lana I know it cant be, but damn they are isolating Clark this year
