Smallville S4 E3 – Facade

Smallville S4 E3 – Facade

Alright, let’s dive back into the early 2000s – an era of low-rise jeans, pop-rock needle drops, and Clark Kent looking confused while beautiful people explode around him. Today we’re looking at Season 4, Episode 3: “Facade.”

TV Guide Preview

High school is already a nightmare of judgment and cliques, but at Smallville High, the “it-crowd” takes things to a literal surgical level. This week, Clark tries to navigate the treacherous waters of senior year and the football team, while a shy girl named Abby Fine undergoes a kryptonite-enhanced plastic surgery that gives her a killer smile – seriously, her kiss causes horrific hallucinations. As Clark deals with the pressures of being the new star quarterback, he has to figure out why his classmates are suddenly losing their minds (and their faces).

Meanwhile, the drama in the Luthor mansion is reaching a boiling point. Lana is back from Paris with a new boyfriend, Jason Teague, who has somehow snagged a job as the school’s assistant football coach. Awkward! Clark has to balance his jealousy, his secret, and a ticking clock to stop a cosmetic craze from turning the student body into a walking horror movie. Grab your letterman jacket, because things are about to get messy on and off the field.

Episode Review

This episode is a classic “Smallville” blend of high school angst and body horror. It’s the quintessential “be careful what you wish for” story. We see the return of the “Freak of the Week” formula, but it feels a bit more grounded in the reality of teenage insecurity. It’s also the episode where Clark officially joins the football team, which is a huge deal for his character arc—watching him try to play “human” while being a god amongst boys is always entertaining.

Starring:

  • Tom Welling (Clark Kent): Peak “pining Clark” here, but showing more confidence on the field.
  • Kristin Kreuk (Lana Lang): Trying to move on, but clearly still tethered to Smallville drama.
  • Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor): Even in a “filler” episode, Lex steals the scene with his subtle descent into obsession.
  • Guest Star / “Freak of the Week”: Abby Fine (played by Brianna Lynn Brown). She plays the “ugly duckling” turned “deadly swan” perfectly.
  • Notable Guest: Michael Ironside appears as General Sam Lane (Lois’s dad). Ironside is a legend, and he brings an immediate, terrifying gravitas to the show.

Special Effects:

The effects in “Facade” are… a choice. We get some early 2000s CGI when Abby’s victims start seeing their own faces melting or distorting in the mirror. It’s effectively creepy and leans into that Final Destination vibe that was popular at the time. The “kryptonite surgery” glow is the standard green we know and love, but the makeup team deserves a shoutout for the “distorted” faces—it’s genuinely unsettling.

Music Track Listing:

  • “Ghetto Musick” by OutKast: Plays during the football scenes.
  • “Eight Half Letters” by Stereoblonde: Background music for the school halls.
  • “Happy” by Sister Hazel: Fitting for the high school vibe.
  • “Fingers and Thumbs” by Erasure: (Cover version) playing during the party scenes.

Rating: ★★★☆☆ (3/5 Stars)

It’s a solid, fun episode that moves the “Clark joins the team” plot forward, even if the “killer plastic surgery” plot is a bit cheesy.

Complete Synopsis and Plot Breakdown

The episode kicks off with Abby Fine, a self-conscious girl whose mother is a plastic surgeon using meteor-rock-infused saline for “miracle” procedures. Abby gets the treatment, turns into a knockout, but realizes her kiss causes people to hallucinate their worst physical fears, leading to total mental breakdowns.

Clark, wanting a “normal” high school experience, decides to try out for the football team. This causes a rift with Jonathan, who is terrified Clark will accidentally kill a linebacker or expose his powers. Clark wins the starting QB spot anyway, mostly because he’s… well, Superman.

Lois Lane is also sticking around, investigating the weirdness at the school (because she can’t help herself). She teams up with Clark to track down why students are losing their minds. They eventually trace it back to Abby’s mom, Dr. Fine, who is more interested in her “research” than her daughter’s soul.

The climax happens at the school dance/party. Abby kisses a few people, chaos ensues, and Clark has to intervene. He manages to save the victims and confront Dr. Fine. In a classic “Smallville” twist, the villain is undone by their own hubris (and some spilled chemicals). The episode ends with Clark realizing that being a hero and a football star is a tough balance, and Lois continues to be the thorn in his side that we all know she’s meant to be.

Lessons and the Road to Superman

The Lesson: Beauty is only skin deep, and true identity comes from what you do, not how you look. Abby tried to change her exterior to fix her interior, and it literally poisoned everyone around her.

Becoming Superman: This episode is a huge stepping stone for Clark’s public persona. By joining the football team, he is learning how to manage his strength under pressure and in the public eye. Superman isn’t just about powers; he’s about the “super-hero” being a symbol. Here, Clark is learning how to be a leader (Quarterback) while keeping his true self hidden. It’s also the beginning of him realizing that he can’t have a “normal” life, every time he tries to just be a jock, the universe reminds him he’s a guardian. Plus, meeting General Lane sets the stage for the complicated relationship Superman will eventually have with the military.
