Prom night has finally arrived in Smallville, but high school royalty comes with a deadly price tag. When obsessive prom queen hopeful Dawn Stiles crashes her car into a ravine packed with meteor rocks, dying doesn’t stop her campaign. Reduced to a body-snatching spirit, Dawn jumps from person to person to ensure her crowning moment happens no matter who gets hurt in the process.

Meanwhile, Clark Kent dreads attending the dance without Lana, while Chloe and Lois scramble to stay alive as their possessed friends turn hostile. Between possessed dance numbers, catty threats, and a live performance by Lifehouse, this is one high school prom where survival is the only real prize worth winning.

Episode Review

“Spirit” is mid-2000s teen drama camp dialed up to an eleven, and it embraces every second of it. Coming right off the intense mythology arcs of Season 4, this episode gives everyone a breather to indulge in classic Freak of the Week mayhem. The body-hopping mechanic allows the regular cast to completely cut loose. Seeing Erica Durance (Lois) channel an obnoxious, crown-obsessed mean girl is comedy gold, but the absolute highlight is Tom Welling playing a possessed Clark Kent strutting, pouting, and chewing the scenery like a disgruntled teenager.

The episode doesn’t take itself too seriously, which is its greatest strength. It gives us genuine high school milestones like prom photos, awkward slow dances, and teenage heartbreak, all wrapped in glowing green meteor nonsense. While the plot is straightforward and ridiculous, the sheer fun the actors are having makes “Spirit” one of the most entertaining and rewatchable filler episodes of the fourth season.

Special Effects & Visuals

The mid-2000s CGI definitely shows its age here. Dawn’s disembodied spirit is rendered as a wispy, glowing green cloud that looks like a rejected screensaver from Windows XP. The visual transition when she enters or exits a host: complete with neon-tinted eyes and glowing skin ripples, yes, it is cheesy, but it gets the point across. Clark’s fiery rescue near the incinerator features some obvious compositing, but the practical stunt work during the car crash at the start holds up reasonably well.

Learning to navigate jealousy, support his friends without relying solely on brute force, and stand up against self-absorbed bullies, even supernatural ones builds the moral foundation he needs to become a selfless protector rather than a detached god.

Complete Synopsis & Plot Breakdown

Senior year prom arrives at Smallville High, and popular student Dawn Stiles is determined to win Prom Queen. While rushing to deliver her ballots, she swerves off the road and crashes into a ravine filled with kryptonite. The crash incinerates her car, but the radiation allows her spirit to detach from her comatose body as an incorporeal entity capable of possessing others through physical contact.

Dawn’s spirit quickly takes over Martha Kent to raid Lana’s wardrobe, then jumps into Lana Lang at the Talon. When Chloe discovers irregularities with the prom ballots and realizes Dawn’s true state at the hospital, possessed-Lana attacks Chloe. Dawn soon leaps into Lois Lane, terrorizing the school, knocking out Chloe, and trapping her in the school’s furnace room alongside Dawn’s comatose body, which she intends to incinerate to hide the evidence.

At the prom, Lifehouse performs as the students dance. Dawn jumps from Lois into Clark Kent, intending to take revenge on Jonathan Kent for interfering with her plans. However, when Clark approaches Jonathan, Jonathan uses a chunk of kryptonite from his pocket to weaken Clark, forcing Dawn’s spirit out of his body. Clark quickly speeds down to the boiler room, rescues an unconscious Chloe and Dawn’s physical body from the flames, and extinguishes the fire.

With her physical body flatlining and her spirit fading away, Dawn is finally neutralized. The prom resumes, and while Lana leaves with Jason, Clark shares a quiet, bittersweet slow dance with Chloe to Lifehouse’s “You and Me,” closing out their senior prom on a peaceful note.
