Smallville S1 E2  –  Metamorphosis

Smallville S1 E2  –  Metamorphosis

Creeping on Lana is creepy mccreeperson – Bugs… ick

Bad CGI bugs

Mom would not be happy with bug boy watching Californication… hey wait a minute that was not out yet.  Must be the song…Chili Peppers…good song and album.  They really help ground the show in its time period. It’s like a little time capsule of the early 2000s.

Hey, Clark, is floating… of course it must be Creepy. Thats the only thing I do not like so far about this show… too much Lana creeping especially on Clark’s part

This show has a thing about car crashes

Wow, excellent job cleaning Greg up the Bugs made him pretty, not what I was expecting.

We find out Gregs whole name…Greg Arkin… LOL Orkin Man

For those who might not know, Orkin is a big pest control company. So, naming our bug boy Greg Arkin is like a sly little joke. It’s ironic because instead of killing bugs, this Arkin becomes one.

I like the fact that Whitney is a complete character, not just a bully

Better go find the necklace… good job on that line and delivery of a subtle fuck you to Whitney.

Clark saves Whitney from yet another crash, feel like no one in Smallville can drive. It’s like everyone in Smallville got their license from a cereal box or something.

It does seem like a running theme. We had Lex’s big crash in the pilot, and now we’ve got more vehicular mayhem in this episode. It’s like the writers found their go-to for putting people in danger.  It gives Clark plenty of opportunities to use his super-strength and speed to save the day. But, it’s pretty funny when you think about it. Smallville must have the highest insurance rates in Kansas!

John Schneider continues to impress me as Pa Kent

Cows!!

Spider boy now has 2million years of intelligence and instinct, uses it to at once kill his mom.

We find out about lead and meteor rock which later helps Clark out… I’m guessing about a hundred more times in the next ten years.

Really good makeup again with bugboy, excellent.

Hey this just became an episode of Scooby Doo wonder how many times that’s going to happen.

I can totally see it. Clark as Fred (the leader), Chloe as Velma (the brains), and Pete as Shaggy (the loyal sidekick). All they’re missing is Daphne and Scooby. Maybe Lana could be Daphne if she ever joins their mystery-solving crew?

That shot of them investigating Greg’s house was a real “Zoinks!” moment. I can almost hear the classic Scooby-Doo tip-toe music playing in the background. It’s like “Meteor Freaks, Where Are You?”

This Scooby-Doo parallel actually fits pretty well with the show’s format, so far. You’ve got the “monster of the week” (or meteor freak, in this case), the team of plucky teenagers investigating, and the big reveal at the end.

I wonder if they’ll keep up this mystery-solving team dynamic as the series goes on? And hey, if they ever introduce a dog character, we’ll know they’re fully committing to the Scooby-Doo homage!

Big end fight and of course the lead comes into play and the meteor rock, Clark wins!  Bug boy becomes a lot of bugs.

Not a fan of the Hulk hand. Doesn’t feel right like if he was getting weaker it should not be getting Hulkified.

How Convenient… it’s lead

But does he? as Whitney gets to free Lana and Shes not mad at him anymore…

PostScript

The only real flaw I see in this show thus far is Clark’s behavior towards Lana can come off as pretty creepy, especially in these early episodes. It’s definitely not a great look for our future Superman.

The whole telescope thing, watching Lana from afar, and some of his more stalker-ish tendencies are pretty cringeworthy. It’s like they were going for “hopelessly devoted” but landed on “restraining order material” instead.

As a Superman fan, this makes me uncomfortable. It doesn’t really jive with the noble, respectful character we know Superman to be.

I think (hope) they were trying to show Clark’s awkwardness and inability to approach Lana normally due to the Kryptonite necklace, but they definitely overshot the mark. It comes off as obsessive rather than endearing.

Let’s hope they tone this down as the series progresses and Clark matures. After all, we want to see him grow into the hero we know he’ll become, right?

It’s important to be critical of the media we enjoy, even when it’s about characters we love.
