Michigan Coach Sherrone Moore Detained by Police for Alleged Assault

Sherrone Moore, The University of Michigan’s former football coach, was detained by police following an alleged assault.

Moore, 39, was in custody in Washtenaw County Jail on Wednesday, December 10, as a suspect in the assault, ESPN reported that day.

Hours earlier, The University of Michigan fired Moore, with the college’s athletic director Warde Manuel making the announcement in a press release.

“U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately,” Manuel, 57, stated. “Following a University investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior.”

Manuel did not elaborate on the nature of the alleged relationship. He said that associate head coach Biff Poggi would serve as interim head coach. Previously, Poggi, 65, was the head coach at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He filled the role of Michigan’s interim head coach for two games earlier this year amid Moore’s suspension as part of a sign-stealing investigation.

Following the coaching shakeup, news broke that Moore was involved in an incident on Wednesday that led to his detainment. He was turned over to the Pittsfield Police Department “for investigation into potential charges.” Police later released a statement to ESPN with further details.

According to the outlet, the department said it responded to a report of an “alleged assault” around 4:10 p.m. and took a suspect — whom wasn’t named — “into custody. This incident does not appear to be random in nature, and there appears to be no ongoing threat to the community.”

The department said that the “suspect was lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail pending review of charges by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor. At this time, the investigation is ongoing. Given the nature of the allegations, the need to maintain the integrity of the investigation, and its current status at this time, we are prohibited from releasing additional details.”

Moore had been in his second year as Michigan head coach. The Wolverines ended the regular season with a 9-3 record and will play The University of Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.

Moore and his wife of 10 years, Kelli, share three daughters: Shiloh, Solei and Sadie.

“Sherrone has proven to be a great leader for our football program, especially the offensive line and players on the offensive side of the football,” Manuel said of Moore when he was hired last year. “He is a dynamic, fierce and competitive individual who gets the best out of the players he mentors. The players love playing for him and being with him in the building every day.”

He continued at the time, “We are thrilled to have Sherrone and his wife, Kelli, and the entire Moore family step into this new role for our football program and university community.”
